Friday nights in the USA at this time of the year means only one thing, time for another round of high school football games!
We opted for the game featuring
the El Camino Real HS Royals (0-1)
at the Newbury Park Panthers (1-0)
It was a BEAUTIFUL night
for American football!
The Opening Kickoff would unfortunately be the last time that the game was close

As what has been the norm over the last three seasons of watching the Royals, tonight would be a struggle.

The rules allowing modern technology on the field during games has been a tremendous upgrade for all coaches and positions but especially for the Offensive Line in my opinion.

some pointers on his first quarter play
It must have worked as Smigiel threw TD passes on each the first two NPHS plays of the game!
Brady Smigiel is only a Freshman but what a start to his high school Varsity career. Tonight he was 9 for 12 passing for 231 yards, 4 TDs and 0 Interceptions. He also ran for a TD on a Read Option Keep play. Leading 44-0 at the intermission, Smigiel did not play in the Second Half.
A proud moment between NPHS Head Coach
Joe Smigiel and his son Brady
There would be many of these proud moments tonight.
After his first two games as the NPHS Quarterback, Smigiel has put up some amazing numbers, especially for a Freshman. His season passing stat line is now 30 for 47 (64%), 558 yards, 8 TDs and 0 Interceptions.
RELENTLESS!

Laurie and I enjoyed sharing a pre-game meal with them and Paul's brother Al at the Ranch Hand BBQ in Newbury Park.
One of the best things of graduating from the University of Washington is having met Paul, one of the good guys, and Joanne a few years later after they were married. They are just a good and fun couple to hang out with all these many years later.
Their son Jason is El Camino Real's Head Coach and that is the reason that we follow the Royals who won the 2021 Los Angeles City DII Championship.

The rules in California high school football state that if at the start of the Fourth Quarter a team leads by 35 or more points, the Mercy Rule is invoked which means that the rest of the game is played using a running clock.
If at any time before the start of the Fourth Quarter both teams agree to it, the Mercy Rule can take effect then. With NPHS ahead 44-0 and at least three ECR players injured in the First Half, such an agreement was in place as the entire Second Half was played with a running clock.

Newbury Park (2-0) will host the Crespi Celts (0-2) next Friday.
The El Camino Real Royals (0-2) will try to get untracked on the road again next Friday against the Calabasas Coyotes (1-1).
Adding to El Camino Real's problems in 2022 is having to play all ten of their games at their opponent's home fields. The Royals Stadium's artificial turf has been ruled unsafe to play on as the surface, made with inferior materials as it turns out, partially melted during the extreme heat this Summer.
