A Much Needed Quiet Day

Monday, August 22, 2022

We had the joy of having Jacob with us most of the day. As has become the norm, he opted to spend much of the morning talking about football in general and watching the NFL channel on TV in particular.

The NFL channel is in the process of announcing their list of the Top 100 players in the league going into the 2022 season. Today in their pre-season countdown, they released the players ranked 21-30.

Jacob was incensed that Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow was ranked #21 while his beloved Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl winning QB Matthew Stafford only rated the #27 spot on the list.

I countered with the indisputable fact was that no one on this 2022 list comes close to old timer . . .

Since the Camarillo Stingers did not practice today, Jacob accompanied Michael to the Newbury Park H.S. practice to observe the Panthers in action.

As I do part time work analyzing the El Camino Real H.S. game videos, who happen to be the Panthers opponent this Friday night, I opted not to go to the practice to avoid any conflict of interest issues.

starting QB Brady Smigiel

Brady is the Head Coach's son and is only a Freshman.

In his first NPHS Varsity game last Friday night, he led the Panthers to a 38-21 win on the road against the Golden Valley H.S. Grizzlies.

Brady had impressive stats in this season opening victory going 21 for 35 passing for 327 yards, four TDs and no interceptions.

Besides that, Brady graciously took extra time with Jacob today to help him improve his still raw receiving skills.

On to EuroBall . . .

With only two weeks left in the regular season, here are the current standings. The three European League of Football Conference Championships have been clinched with their accompanying guaranteed playoff bids.

The only things left to determine are the final playoff seedings and which second place team will earn the fourth and final playoff berth.

The 9-1 Hamburg Sea Devils
are easily the Champs of the North

The #2 Berlin Thunder (6-4) are still in the hunt for the playoffs but they need to win their last two games and get some help from other teams.

The 9-1 Vienna Vikings are champions
of the ELF's toughest Conference

The 7-3 Tirol Raiders visit the 6-4 Frankfurt Galaxy in a key game for two clubs fighting it out for the lone Wild Card berth.

The surprising Barcelona Dragons
rule the South with an 8-2 record

The Southern Conference Champion Dragons have the toughest end of the season slate beyond a doubt with road trips to the Central Conference Champion Vienna Vikings (9-1) this week, and the Northern Conference Champion Hamburg Sea Devils (9-1) the following weekend.

Then it's off to the playoffs to more than likely see one of these two teams again in the opening round.

The Rhein Fire (6-4) are the fourth and final team with a chance at earning their way into the playoffs via the Wild Card.

WEEK 13 ELF SCHEDULE
Barcelona Dragons (8-2) at Vienna Vikings (9-1)
Wroclaw Panthers (4-6) at Hamburg Sea Devils (9-1)

Tirol Raiders (7-3) at Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4)
Rhein Fire (6-4) at Cologne Centurions (2-8)

Berlin Thunder (6-4) at Istanbul Rams (1-9)
Leipzig Kings (2-8) at Stuttgart Surge (0-10)

As it stands at the moment, the
ELF Playoffs are seeded thusly

#4 Tirol Raiders (7-3) at #1 Hamburg Sea Devils (9-1)
#3 Barcelona Dragons (8-2) at #2 Vienna Vikings (9-1)

While the Tirol Raiders currently are in the driver's seat for the one Wild Card spot, the Berlin Thunder (6-4), Rhein Fire (6-4) and Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4) still have a shot at it but time is of the essence.
