A Busy Weekend of Overseas American Football

Sat. & Sun., May 25-26, 2024
Lot's of football this weekend which is always a good thing for me.

Let's start South of the Border . . .

An unusual match-up

These U.S.A. collegiate games overseas usually involve NCAA DII or NAIA schools.

This one featured an NCAA DI non-scholarship school.

The Drake University Bulldogs are from Des Moines, Iowa. They were the 2023 Pioneer Football League Champions going 8-0 in league play and 8-4 overall. They were eliminated in the first round of last year's NCAA FCS playoffs.

The Bulldogs were headed to Panama for a ten day excursion that included each player taking part in a Drake University three credit business course titled "Panama and the Global Economy."

Of course, they were also there to play a friendly football game against an all-star team made up of players from Panama's two American football leagues.

Interesting but no contest.

Final Score
Drake 64 - Panama 0

Italy's top league had its final
regular season games this weekend

Firenze Guelfi (6-1) vs.
Parma Panthers (4-3)

This promised to be a good one.

And it was, Parma in a mild upset

Ancona Dolphins (5-2) vs.
Torino Giaguari (2-5)

This one looked to be non-competitive.

And it was, Ancona won easily

Bologna Warriors (0-7) vs.
Legnano Frogs (3-4)

This may be ugly as Bologna had only scored 14 points total this season and had been shut out five times.

And it was. Make that six shutouts
for the extremely young Warriors

Varese Skorpions (7-0) vs.
Milano Rhinos (2-5)

The Skorpions looked to have an easy time of it.

But they didn't which is typical
of these Skorpions

The Skorpions entered the Fourth Quarter with a commanding lead of 42-22.

The Rhinos then proceeded to score on their next three possessions to take a 43-42 lead with 1:59 left in the game.

YIKES!

No problem really. The Varese squad returned the kickoff to the 50 yard line and got another 15 yard gift on the return from the Milano squad via a face mask penalty.

On the first play from scrimmage, the Skorpions threw a 35 yard TD pass and successfully executed a two-point PAT with 1:09 left in the game. Skorpions lead, 50-43.

The Skorpions Defense, thanks to three consecutive holding calls on the Rhinos, held serve to win the ball game.

A wacky final weekend with the
Lazio Marines (3-5) having a Bye

The playoff Semi-Finals will be played June 15-16.

Varese will host the winner of the Legnano-Parma game.

Firenze will be at home against the Lazio-Ancona game winner.

For our beloved Skorpions, the playoffs will be tough regardless of their glossy 8-0 record and #1 seed.

Varese 7 - #2 seed Firenze 0
Varese 21 - #3 seed Ancona 20

Football News Leading Into the Weekend

Friday, May 24, 2021

Here is a look at the happenings around the globe in American football.

I am not a big fan of Friday
night college football games

As Paul Sabolić always says, "Friday nights are for high school football."

The Washington Huskies have these two Friday night games, at Rutgers on September 27th and at home against UCLA on November 15th.

You better dress warmly if you are going to the UCLA game.

USC's home schedule features
four big name contests

The Trojans home games against Wisconsin, Penn State, Nebraska and Notre Dame are all of interest to me.

The San Francisco 49ers famed
Million Dollar Backfield 1953-55

That was a LOT of money back then!

L. to. R.: Hugh McElhenny, Joe Perry, John Henry Johnson and Y.A. Tittle

All four are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

McElhenny and Perry both played at Compton Junior College but not at the same time.

Jason Sabolić sent me his 2024
El Camino Real H.S. schedule

Now to pinpoint the best dives for appropriate pre-game meals.

The standings in the Egyptian League

The Cairo Hell Hounds at 2-0 come as no surprise to David Lassen, their #1 fan in the American Midwest.

Coach Michael Wood has his
Helsinki Roosters rolling at 2-0
in the Finnish Maple League

Two weeks until this International
Orquídea Bowl between clubs from
Costa Rica and Colombia

The Spanish DII/Serie B title
game to be played on Sunday

France's Besancon Bisons
look mean and also in need of
giving the federation a urine sample

French DIII playoffs

Poland's Zabki Dukes tee it
up on Sunday as well

Italian DIII/9FL playoffs are set
to start on June 1st and 2nd

The IFL's, Italy's DI, final
weekend of regular season game

The 7-0 Varese Skorpions will host
the 2-5 Milano Rhinos on Sunday

International Game in Rome

The 3-5 Lazio Marines have finished their IFL regular season and still have an outside chance of making the playoffs if the Milano Rhinos and Torino Giaguari, both 2-5, both lose this weekend which is a distinct possibility.

On Sunday, the Marines play the NCAA DIII's Kenyon College Owls from Ohio. The Owls compete in the eight university North Coast Athletic Conference with team's in Indiana and Ohio.

In 2023 the Owls record was 2-8 overall and 2-6 in NCAC play.

What a GREAT eight day experience
in Italy for the men from Kenyon!

The European League of Football
opens their fourth season this weekend

There are 17 clubs competing in the ELF this year based in Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

Pre-Season Power Rankings
really don't mean much

Yes it is in Europe's
top league!

14 teams will be in action
while three clubs have byes

I'm still backing the
Barcelona Dragons in 2024

The ELF will again have three conferences this season.

The Vienna Vikings are
the class of the East

The Tirol Raiders are the
pre-season favorites in the Central

Arguably the ELF's toughest
conference, I'll go with the
Rhein Fire in the West

Each team faces a grueling 12 game regular season schedule that ends in late August. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

In non-football news . . .

I parked in front of this
