A Stay at Home Pair of Days and a Safari

Thurs.-Fri., May 28-29, 2026

Lots of down time while our houseguests were out exploring the sights of SoCal but there are things to report.

We did get some good news on the Proud Grandparents Front.

Jacob will be receiving an award at his
Middle School Graduation Ceremony

We do not know the nature of the award. We'll be surprised on June 9th when it's announced.

Good times.

Kenya Safari

On Thursday night we joined four other couples at the home of Sharon and Richard Bellman.

We were assembled to see some fascinating photos of Richard's recent nine day safari adventure in Kenya. He did this amazing adventure on his own as Sharon was not keen on joining him this time out on the road.

By the way, the photo above is not one of Richard's. I got it from the Google Images website, but it is indeed quite representative of the many excellent photos that Richard shared with us.

We were all amazed by Richard's photos and stories about his days in the wild areas of Kenya. Quite the expedition.

His talk definitely whet my travel wanderlust. While friend and long time travel partner Koreen FitzGerald is interested in a Kenyan safari of our own, her husband Brian and Laurie are not.

Spain it is then!

On Friday evening we went to dinner with Mallory and Chester. They wanted try some authentic Mexican food.

In Camarillo it does not get
any more authentic than
El Tecolote

Mallory's ala carte burrito
was just about right

Laurie's fish taco plate was HUGE!

So was Chester's Taco Platter

Let's take a closer look at
that Taco Platter

Yes, we asked for some to-go boxes.

Darn good food, ARRIBA!

Speaking of travel wanderlust

The Costa Rica Sharks will be sending their team to beautiful Mendoza, Argentina for the Second South American Bowl.

The Costa Rican club dominated the six team First South American Bowl that we attended with the FitzGeralds in November of 2024.

By dominated I mean that they won their three tournament games in 2024 by a combined score of 112-6!

I could easily go back to Mendoza for the food, wine and football.

We got the news that our friend Julien Urgenti in Lyon, France now has a new office in his home. He wants to decorate it with some old school football photos, could I help him?

Google Images to the rescue yet again.

Hopefully, these photos plus the Google Images website will give him some decorating ideas.

A random aerial photo of
Los Angeles' old Wrigley Field
popped up on Facebook

This was the home of the old Los Angeles Angels of AAA Pacific Coast League fame from 1925-1957.

In 1961, the American League's expansion Los Angeles Angels played their inaugural campaign with Wrigley Field as their home base.

The only game that I ever attended at Wrigley was a 1958 Spring Training game between the Cleveland Indians and San Francisco Giants to a less than packed house. We were there because my Dad wanted me to see the "Cuban Comet," Orestes "Minnie" Miñoso, play for the Indians. He was electric!

Minnie Miñoso, seen here in 1951
as a Chicago White Sox, was elected
into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022

This beloved player of whom it was once said by a baseball pundit "played the game the way God intended it to be played," played for the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Senators.

While the bulk of his major league career was from 1949 to 1964, the White Sox brought him back to play in a game in 1976 and again in 1980 so that their beloved son could claim to have played in five different decades. His final MLB appearance occurred in 1980 at tender age of 56.

Thanks Dad.

End your days with memories, not dreams.

More Solitude Until Chester Arrives

Wednesday, May 27, 2026
Another calm day with a perfect houseguest in Mallory who, when she is not working on-line, just enjoys reading a good book in the wonderful SoCal sunshine.

She fits in perfectly to our lifestyle.

We opted for a late lunch at Camarillo's Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill.

Mallory opted for the small
pulled pork BBQ sandwich

Laurie opted for her usual order of BBQ chicken breast while I ordered a healthy tri-tip salad.

Great dining and chatting all the way around.

After dining, we headed over to the Hertz Rental Car office in Camarillo for Mallory to pick up a car for the rest of the week.

Not quite as busy as the
Hertz office at LAX

She scored a nice, roomy Nissan

Her beau, Chester, arrives from Seattle tonight at 9:45 at the Hollywood-Burbank Airport.

I didn't want her driving down there by herself, so I opted to be her chauffeur again.

We arrived at this great
metropolitan airport with
just enough time to . . .

. . . peruse the travel brochures
on display about two of SoCal's . . .

. . . MAJOR tourist destinations

Of course, a stop at the iconic
Rolling Pin Donuts is atop any
traveler's list of things to do
when visiting Camarillo

Just ask Joanne or Paul Sabolić.

Finally, Mallory and Chester
were reunited for the one
hour drive back to Casa Contreras

Back to football . . .

As expected, EuroBall guru Julien Urgenti was quick to respond to yesterday's query about a possible European Super Bowl this year between the champions of the two latest attempts at mega-leagues, the American Football League of Europe (AFLE) and the European Football Alliance (EFA).

Julien says that no such game is planned at the conclusion of this season in September or in the foreseeable future for that matter.

Pity.

The Los Angele Rams
are gearing up for a Super Bowl
run of their own in the NFL

Should be a great game but I'll still take the Cavaliers at home.

Huskies kicking off the 2026  season
vs. Washington State in the Apple Cup
game at 1:00 p.m. on a SUNDAY?

Thanks to mega-TV money, anything is possible no matter how untraditional.

Reading Is FUNdamental!

An extremely well written, detailed
account of the Battle of Gettysburg
July 1-3, 1863

Insight's into Chamberlain's successful Union Bayonet Charge down Little Round Top and the Rebel's unsuccessful and highly controversial Pickett's Charge the next day were just part of this book's charm as it explored the men involved those three fateful days in Pennsylvania thoroughly.

Vanessa's AI prowess added
to the end of reading this
most interesting Civil War tome

The string of good days continued. Hopefully there will be more to come this week.

Tranquility Tuesday

Tuesday, May 26, 2026

After a fun but hectic Memorial Day, a quiet day at home was a good thing.

Before I forget yet again . . .

. . . Monday was Flag Day in our
ancestral Province of Asturias

Asturias is located in the north of España

This was seen in recently in
Oaxaca, Mexico

I've always liked vacationing south of the border.

Speaking of Mexico, we took our guest Mallory to Ruby's Mexican Restaurant for lunch on an overcast Taco Tuesday.

Hard not to smile while eating tacos and burritos.

But I digress from even more updates from the wonderful world of EuroBall.

Italian DI Standings with only one
weekend left in the regular season

The top six teams make the playoffs.

As it stands the top five teams listed above are in but the final seeding can still change.

The Mariners and Aquile both have a shot at that sixth and final post-season berth.

Last Regular Season

A meaningless game for both teams other than the Guelfi's desire for perfection.

Milano Rhinos (0-7)

An Aquile win earns them a ticket to the playoffs as the #6 Seed.

Sunday, May 31, 2026
Legnano Frogs (5-2) at
Parma Panthers (5-2)

The winer of this one earns the #2 playoff seed and a first round bye. The loser will be the #3 seed and have to play in the Wild Card round.

This would be one of them.

Let's take a look at EuroBalls two major leagues.

We'll start with the European Football Alliance.

All eight AFLE teams will
be in action this weekend

It is hard to say which is the better, more competitive league so early in the season. Time will tell.

I wonder if the two leagues will get together at the end of their season's for a European Super Bowl game?

I tend to believe this as well

So, another week is in full swing and all is going well. Can't ask for anything more than that.
