A Tough Day and a Better One

Tues.-Weds., August 9-10, 2022

No one said that learning to play American football was going to be easy.

This became abundantly clear to young Jacob on Tuesday night at his Camarillo Stingers practice.

The gathering before
the opening whistle

Coaches setting the tone for the
night which was simply,
"BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!"

This is the one essential part of the game that Jacob still has a lot to first experience and then learn.

Jacob, on Defense on the far side, painfully learning the first Law of Physics that states, "Low Pad WINS!"

I love Coach Anthony who is
bending over Jacob

He clearly understands that Jacob has been struggling the last two practices with the hitting part of the game and can be seen here offering Jacob positive encouragement in a calm demeanor.

At least he stayed on his feet on this play.

Jacob was the ball carrier

An Open Field Tackle means
get the ball carrier down
any way that you can

After all of these drills, he still had that smile on his face. I think that in large part that was due to Coach Anthony who tutored him throughout a tough day.

I am happy to report that the Wednesday night Stingers workout was a better one for Jacob, if nothing else he is proving to be resilient. Most of all, I believe that he is simply happy to be part of a positive team of fellow players and coaches.

of yet still not thrilled about contact

This might have been my favorite play of the day.

RUN TO THE BALL!

Finally Getting Off the Ball

In a previous video of a one-on-one drill, Jacob got pushed around because he did not move his feet at the snap. Here he does and gets solid penetration that helps disrupt this play.

On an earlier play in the scrimmage, he did the same thing and got to the ball carrier just as he got the handoff. He was able to rip the ball away thus recording both a Forced Fumble and a Fumble Recovery on one play.

Good Times!

Reading Is FUNdamental!

Just another dive into the
depths of Nordic Noir

This is the second book of a soon to be trilogy that must be read in order. I had read the first installment, The Golden Cage, about a year ago. It started slow but really picked up in the last half of that read.

Having read The Golden Cage made this book a great read from start to finish. By the way, the finish of Silver Tears left the door wide open for a third tome in what is referred to as the Faye's Revenge series but it has yet to be published.

You can bet that I'll be all over that book when it finally comes out.

By the way, our heroine, Faye, has now revenge killed five people in these first two stories. She drowned two boys who raped her, strangled her brother who also raped her, burned to death her ex-boyfriend and electrocuted her pedophile husband.

Now, that's a Nordic Noir heroine for you!

Over the last dozen years, I have now read a total of 63 dark, depressing Nordic Noir novels from authors writing about the seedy side of life in their native countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

This is all because in 2010, just before leaving to coach Sweden's Hässleholm Hurricanes, our friend Michael D'Antuono handed me a book and said, "Here, read this Stieg Larson book The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I think you'll like it."

I am easily led astray by nefarious characters like Michael as it turns out.
