A 98th Birthday Celebration

Sunday, August 14, 2022

A meeting of the Contreras Clan was called for at our ancestral San Marino, California home on this warm August afternoon because . . .

. . . we all wanted to celebrate my
Mother Chuny's 98th Birthday!

As often happens, we celebrated her special day on a Sunday instead of her actual birthday which this year is actually tomorrow.

At her age she mostly observed the proceedings of the day but seemed to relish the well deserved attention.

With two of our grandkids and our niece Lauren's two boys, Max and Leo, in attendance it quickly turned into a pool party.

about her completion percentage

Leo was ON THE MONEY!

Max, like Mary, was unencumbered
by football dreams today

one Great-Grandmother own?

LOTS as it turns out

An exhilarating  game of Water
Volleyball was the perfect ending
to our shared pool time

Of course, after Great-Grandmother Chuny blew out the candles on her cake and opened her presents, the three boys, cousins Lauren and Michael plus Aunts Linda and Marilyn had to engage in a bit of warfare armed to the teeth with their wide variety of Nerf weapons.

What about Mary, you ask?

She took over the important
role of Nerf Arms Dealer

Make that the EVIL Nerf Arms dealer!

She more than loved her role in the battles.

Her only nemesis was her complete fear of Lauren's dog Buddy. This somewhat irrational fear kept her in check from even bigger illicit ammunition sales to both sides during this Clash of the Clan War.

It was a great day seeing everyone to be sure.

While we were enjoying one of our rare family get togethers, they were still playing American football in the European League of Football.

On Saturday, we chronicled the two Southern Conference games with the 7-2 Barcelona Dragons defeating the 2-7 Cologne Centurions 37-15 and the 5-4 Rhein Fire keeping their faint playoff hopes alive by walloping the 1-8 Istanbul Rams, 50-32.

As for Sunday's ELF Week 11 results . . .

In a Northern Conference game, the
Hamburg Sea Devils (8-1) showed no mercy
on the hapless Leipzig Kings (0-9)

The other Northern Conference game
saw the 6-3 Berlin Thunder take
care of their business against
the 3-6 Wroclaw Panthers

The Central Conference produced the
biggest shocker of the ELF weekend as
the defending ELF Champion 6-3 Frankfurt
Galaxy overwhelmed the 8-1 Vienna Vikings

The Vikings were the last undefeated ELF team heading into Week 11.

Does that mean that the 1972 Miami Dolphins were drinking champagne again somewhere?

The other Central Conference
game went as expected with the
6-3 Tirol Raiders cruising to victory
over the 0-9 Stuttgart Surge

The complete Week 11 ELF results

With only three weeks left in the regular season, here are the ELF Conference Standings, remember that the four team playoff will feature the three Conference Champions plus the one club deemed to be best of the eventual three second place finishers.

The 8-1 Sea Devils will visit the
6-3 Berlin Thunder in Week 12

This is a key game if the Thunder are to stay in the hunt for that final playoff spot.

The Vienna Vikings are still
atop the Conference

The key game here is the 6-3 Frankfurt Galaxy's Week 12 road game to the Southern Conference's current #2 team, the 5-4 Rhein Fire. It is a must win for both teams in their quest for that elusive last playoff slot.

The Barcelona Dragons are in
good shape in the Southern Conference

IF they don't get cocky in their Week 12 home field battle with the 0-9 Stuttgart Surge. Remember, just a few weeks ago the 1-8 Istanbul Rams got their only win to date at the expense of the Dragons.

Charity can definitely NOT begin at home this week!

WEEK 12 ELF GAMES
Hamburg Sea Devils (8-1) at Berlin Thunder (6-3)
Wroclaw Panthers (3-6) at Leipzig Kings (2-7)

Stuttgart Surge (0-9) at Barcelona Dragons (7-2)
Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) at Rhein Fire (5-4)

Cologne Centurions (2-7) at Tirol Raiders (6-3)
Istanbul Rams (1-8) at Vienna Vikings (8-1)

Though not mathematically secure
yet, the three Conference leaders look to
all be in the playoffs one way or another . . .

The current ELF playoff seeding has the #1 Hamburg Sea Devils (8-1), leaders in the Northern Conference hosting the #4 seeded Wild Card Tirol Raiders (6-3), from the Central Conference and the current top rated second place club.

The other Semi-Final game would see the #3 seeded, Southern Conference leading Barcelona Dragons (7-2) at the #2 seeded, Central Conference top dog Vienna Vikings (8-1).

Also still in the hunt, at least mathematically, for that one last Wild Card spot are the 6-3 Berlin Thunder, the 6-3 Frankfurt Galaxy and the 5-4 Rhein Fire.

The following five clubs have now been eliminated from all playoff consideration: the Wroclaw Panthers (3-6), the the Leipzig Kings (2-7), the Cologne Centurions (2-7 and the Stuttgart Surge (0-9).

Still, LOTS can happen in these final three regular season ELF weekends to rearrange the final playoff schedule.

That's why they play the games.

In Spain, the Mallorca Voltors
are starting their 2022-23 season
recruiting in earnest!

TRUE!
JUST DO IT!

Again . . .
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!
