Three More Days With LOTS of American Football News

Sat.-Mon., August 6-8, 2022

American football was still pretty much front and center the last few days.

When Mary says, "We're taking a photo
from tallest to shortest."

We take a photo from tallest to shortest!

On Monday, Michael and Vanessa celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Meanwhile in Vantaa, Finland . . .

The Women's World Championships of
Tackle Football wrapped up on Sunday

It was time to hand out the medals as the
eight country tournament came to a close

To recap, each played three games in a nine day span except for Team Mexico and Team Great Britain. Team Mexico had to forfeit its first game to Team Great Britain due to the Mexican Federation's complete incompetence.

The final slate of games

Sweden's Defensive Line was READY!

Australia nosed out Sweden for 7th Place

In the future, both of these teams need to really upgrade their Offenses as Australia seemingly meager 19 points this week far surpassed Sweden's being shutout in all three of their battles.

Here is how both teams fared this past week:

#7 Seeded AUSTRALIA (1-2)
Lost to Canada 6-33
Lost to Mexico 6-34
Beat Sweden 7-0

#5 Seeded SWEDEN (0-3)
Lost to Finland 0-40
Lost to Germany 0-6
Lost to Australia 0-7

Mexico dominated Germany for 5th Place

For Team Mexico, this was really a case of what might have been if the Mexican Federation wasn't, I repeat, so incompetent!

Germany also needs Offensive help in the future having only scored 6 points in their three contests.

The week's results for these two national clubs:

#3 Seeded MEXICO (2-1)
Forfeit Loss to Great Britain
Beat Australia 34-6
Beat Germany 28-0

#8 Seeded Germany (1-2)
Lost to the United States 0-63
Beat Sweden 6-0
Lost to Mexico 0-28

Finland edged Canada for the Bronze Medal

This was a fight to the finish, no pun intended, between two countries that are perennial medal contenders in tournaments like this one.

Both of the clubs had solid weeks:

#4 Seeded FINLAND (2-1)
Beat Sweden 40-0
Lost to the United States 10-28
Beat Canada 19-17

#2 Seeded CANADA (1-2)
Beat Australia 33-6
Lost to Great Britain 13-20
Lost to Finland 17-19

The HEAVILY favored USA coasted
past Great Britain for the Gold Medal

The only surprise here was that the #6 seeded Team Great Britain made it to the Gold Medal game.

The road to the Gold and Silver Medals took shape thusly:

#1 Seeded United States (3-0)
Beat Germany 63-0
Beat Finland 28-10
Beat Great Britain 42-14

#6 Seeded Great Britain (2-1)
Forfeit Win over Mexico
Beat Canada 20-13
Lost to the United States 14-42

The European League of Football
enjoyed a league wide BYE this
past weekend

Our beloved Barcelona Dragons (6-2)
travel to Germany next Saturday to
take on the Cologne Centurions (2-6)

All 12 ELF teams only have four more regular season games left on their schedules.

The Barcelona Dragons became
even more beloved with this great
ESPN segment on their DL Michael Sam

In Las Vegas, Kevin started
the Fifth Grade on Monday

School started on AUGUST 8th, YIKES!

Just when we thought that we were out of the uniform and equipment shipping business, I got a call from the coach at Agoura H.S.

Come to the school on Monday, I have some gear for you.

Thus I was off to Agoura H.S. thanks
to our friend Debi Murphy lending me
her pickup truck to pick up the latest
donation to the cause

It was HOT!

Members of the Agoura H.S. football team were being lectured by an EMT about the dangers of practicing in hot weather and how to prepare to avoid succumbing to said dangers.

You have to be STRONG to practice
or play in Agoura this time of year

I arrived about 20 minutes early for my meeting with the Agoura coach, so I continued to roam around the Agoura Chargers Stadium.

Agoura Girls Track Record Board

One for the Agoura Boys too

A nice field at AHS

When I first started coaching at both Thousand Oaks and Westlake High Schools in the 1970s, Agoura had no lights on this field.

All Varsity games were 1:00 p.m. affairs on Saturdays and the heat was always a huge factor. We even had some parents in those visiting stands across the field pass out due to the heat one game.

So what were we given . . .

58 pristine gray Under Armour
game pants and . . .

. . . lots of Shoulder Pads . . .

. . . 38 Shoulder Pads to be exact!

On to the Camarillo Stingers Monday night practice with an emphasis on hitting and physicality.

Wisely, it was in small doses.

An interesting twist on the
old three-on-three drill

Here is the drill in action

On this drill the three players on the left are on Offense while the three on the right are Defenders trying to make a tackle.

On this first video Jacob, with the white towel in the back of his pants, is the swiveled hipped ball carrier.

Now Jacob is on Defense
getting in on a tackle

Bull-in-the-Ring,
2022 version

There once was a drill known by the same name that many of us went through and somehow survived in our youth. That drill was much more violent and cruel if the truth be told.

This was the first time that Jacob was in this drill, he has to really work on improving his get off to have a chance in future one-on-one match-ups like this one.

Time to scrimmage . . .

The white towel is on Defense
again as the Nose Tackle

Trying too get off the Center's block
and into Hot Pursuit

Jacob was fairly solid again tonight except for one play where he was blown off the line and unceremoniously dumped on his back in a cloud of dust.

The coaches were concerned about his health but only Jacob's pride had been injured.

He literally just dusted himself off for several seconds trying to regain himself, but how would he react on the next play?

Why with a QB Sack of course!

He bounced back and Michael and I were extremely proud!

After all, getting up after being knocked down is one of American football's great lessons.

At the end of practice, the coaches picked Jacob to raise his hand for his teammates to latch onto and break the final huddle of the day.

Jacob was ALL smiles as we headed home for the day.

He is having a good first experience in American football in large part due to the extremely positive attitude and patience of the coaches.
