A Visit to TOHS, a Meet and Greet with Blog Followers and Another Stingers Practice

Roman Gabriel was the Los Angeles Rams QB when I was a much younger, impressionable boy in the 1960s.

After playing for North Carolina State, he was drafted as the number two overall pick in the 1962 NFL draft by the Rams.

He was the NFL's MVP in 1969 towards the end of his 11 year stint in Los Angeles which was followed by another five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Today is Roman's . . .

. . . 82nd Birthday

Happy Birthday indeed
to this legendary Ram!

With our planned Thousand Oaks H.S. 50th Anniversary Reunion of the 1972 Marmonte League football championship team now only two weeks away, I stopped at TOHS to tie up some last minute loose ends.

The Conejo Valley Championship Trophy

This trophy goes to the winner of the annual Newbury Park-Thousand Oaks football game.

This series started in 1970, my first year teaching and coaching at TOHS. That first contest ended in a 48-48 tie! Amazingly, with 1:02 left in the game the score was 40-40, two more TDs and a sixth two-point conversion for each team made for an exciting finish to a wacky game.

The two schools will meet again this season for the 54th time on September 23rd at TOHS.

Made from chrome automobile bumpers, it was created by a local artist.

The 1972 team will be introduced to the crowd just before the Lancers home opener against the Segerstrom H.S. Jaguars in two weeks.

Back in 1972, this was the football team's locker room.

Some strong boys at TOHS nowadays

A big surprise

Dave Halub, a HB-WB, was a big part of our first two teams at Westlake H.S. in 1978 and 1979. His son Will is a Senior at TOHS this year and is their key WR.

I ran into Dave this morning in his role as one of the TOHS Football Booster Club leaders who were doing everything possible to get things ready for another great Lancer season.

After wrapping up things at TOHS, I met Paul Sabolic and Michael D'Antuono for a delightful two and a half hour lunch. We were way too busy solving most of the world's problems to bother with any picture taking.

I stopped at the Porto's Bakery
in Northridge on the way home
for some much needed supplies

In the evening, it was back to Camarillo's Freedom Park for the last Stingers practice of the week. It was a lighter practice in helmets and shoulder pads only.

BALL!

Lined up at RB, Jacob showed
off his blocking skills before

You MUST catch the ball if
you can get two hands on it

Still a work in progress but he continues to come off the field after two hours of practice with a smile on his face and begging to continue catching and throwing with his friends.

These are good signs.
