Sports Saturday in Fillmore and Beyond!

Saturday, September 17, 2022

If it's a Saturday in September in the USA, then it is time for sports of all sorts.

We'll start in Las Vegas, Nevada . . .

Grandson Kevin had his first
soccer game of the 2022 season

He won't be hard to spot him in that kit!

As for his game, he scored a GOOOOOOOAL and his team won.

A good start to say the least for the Orange.

Back in California, at toasty Fillmore H.S., the Camarillo Stingers Freshman team played their fourth game of the year.

2 Wins - 1 Loss

The Stingers were attempting to get back on track after last weekends 12-6 loss to the LA City Ducks (3-0).

The Fillmore Raiders
0 Wins - 3 Losses

Last Saturday, the Raiders lost to the Oxnard Knights (1-2) 8-0.

Oh the people that you meet
at these Stingers games

Rio Mesa H.S. football teammates from the Class of 1994, Justin Schmidt and Michael Contreras. Justin has been a high school and Pop Warner referee for many years now.

Laurie Contreras representing the Crescenta Valley H.S., Class of 1966.

Life would be hectic in The Pit today

Special Mention to Stingers
#55 Center C.J. McDowell

He was dominant all game long!

Old #99 on the Kickoff Team

It was an Onside Kickoff

In the scramble for the ball . . .

. . . Camarillo recovered to the
collective joy of the Stingers!

Jacob ready to go at Nose Tackle

Now it gets serious

That's a lot of gray helmets
aiming for Jacob

Jacob getting through the
Raiders Offensive Line

Jacob at Left Tight End

KEEP HUSTLING!

Keep your pad level down

The vaunted Stingers Sweep
accounted for all three First Half TDs

A rare Stingers pass play

Jacob was a Wide Receiver on this play. He and his teammate #19 are a tad to close by Air Coreyell standards.

To no surprise, the pass was short and fell incomplete.

Good blocking form by Jacob
now back at Left Tight End

Proud to see Jacob sustaining his block

Still blocking which led to . . .

. . . this third Stingers' TD!

Jacob knew that there was only one thing left to do in this situation . . .

. . . CELEBRATE!

Good Vertical Jump by both of them!

The Stingers led 20-0 at the intermission.

Jacob's blocking is improving
each week, he just needs consistency

Another Kickoff

Hustling in the open field

More of Jacob's blocking

I like #11's leaping attempt at a QB Sack

He was easily the Raiders best player.

Trying to find a Raider to block

Not much happened in the Second Half as the Stinger (3-1) returned to Camarillo with a 20-0 win over the Fillmore Raiders (0-4).

The official Gold Coast Youth Football League website has yet to post the scores of the other two Freshman American Conference games played today.

Updates will be posted about the standings as soon as they become available.

After the game, the team celebrated at Camarillo's Institution Ale for pizza and drinks.

A good time was had by all.

The Washington Huskies WON!

It was an excellent performance by the unranked Dawgs in beating the #11 ranked Michigan State Spartans, 39-28.

Next Saturday, the Huskies (3-0) will host the Stanford Cardinal (1-1) in their first PAC-12 game while the Spartans (2-1) will open their BIG-10 schedule at home against a good Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-0) squad.

The "crowd" for the South Alabama (2-0)
vs. UCLA (2-0) game at the Rose Bowl
was, shall we say, SPARSE!

The UCLA student section was
not at all intimidating

UCLA needed a last second Field Goal to win the game 32-31.

On Sunday, the 0-1 Rams try
to get back on track at home
against the Atlanta Falcons (0-1)

Today was a good day but tomorrow it's "Go Rams GO!"
