The End of the First FULL BORE Weekend of Football in America

Sunday, September 11, 2022

Hard to believe that it's been 21 years now . . .

Starting this weekend, all of football crazy America is now happy what with high school games on Fridays, college games on Saturdays and now NFL regular season games, starting today, on Sundays!

Not to worry, of course we will also have a few made for TV games played on several of the other four days of the week as well.

We'll start this American football review with our beloved band of Stingers who grandson Jacob calls his.

We mentioned in yesterday's post that the Stingers (2-1) lost to the LA City Ducks (3-0) 12-6.

The schedule continues despite the setback . . .

On Saturday, September 17th the
2-1 Stingers will travel to Fillmore H.S.
where they will take on . . .

. . . the Fillmore Raiders (0-3) at Noon

There are lots of great little Mexican restaurants in Fillmore, hmmm . . .

On Sunday evening, São Paulo time, the Brazilian Federation announced the final 45 man roster for the IFAF World Championship Americas Qualifying Tournament of American football scheduled for next January in Mexico City.

Four National Teams from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Panama will battle it out in Mexico's splendid capital city for the honor of being the one team to represent Central and South America in the IFAF World Championship Tournament to be held in Germany next Summer.

The CBFA, Brazil's governing body for American football, does a great job creating interest in our sport via all forms of social media

Here was the announcement
of the 45 man roster for Mexico City

They started with the glamour positions

Two Quarterbacks, four Running Backs and five Wide receivers did not seem to be too excessive.

In the Pit we'll welcome two
Tight Ends and nine Offensive Linemen

That's a total of 22 players on the Offensive side of the ball.

Welcome to the Dark Side

Seven Defensive Linemen and seven Linebackers provides lots of depth up front.

I was happy to see that all five Brazilian Linebackers that I coached in last March's Brasil Onças Camp made the final cut. Luis, Igor, Giovanni, Jefferson and Joao were a joy to coach.

I'm guessing that the two other LBs joining the team who were not at the Onças Camp will be good ones too.

The Defensive Backs feature
four Safeties and four Cornerbacks

That makes it 22 roster spots for our Defensive minded coaches and players.

So we have 22 players on Offense and 22 Defensive athletes making a total of 44 players on the Onças roster.

Wait, I thought the the Federation was announcing a 45 man roster tonight?

Well there is one more name on the the list, Amilcar Gaspar Neto of the powerhouse Timbó Rex team. He will be our Kicker and Punter in mile high Mexico City.

This time around, I will be the Brasil Onças Special Teams Coordinator and will spend most of my time with Amilcar. I must say that in evaluating the potential kickers/punters for this tournament, Amilcar clearly stood out as being the best of the best at his positions in Brazil.

I am looking forward to another amazing experience during what should be a BEAUTIFUL week for American football in Mexico City.

The latest AP college Top 25 poll does not
include our 2-0 Washington Huskies

A win over the #11 Michigan State Spartans, also 2-0, this coming Saturday in Seattle might just remedy that omission.

On to the Continent . . .

European League of Football
Semi-Final Playoff Game
#3 Barcelona Dragons (8-4)
at
#2 Vienna Vikings (10-2)

These two clubs met twice during the regular season with Vienna winning both times, first by seven points in Vienna and later in the season by six in Barcelona.

Would the third time be the charm for the Dragons?

No

I watched the game live on one of our more obscure cable TV channels, NXT. This one was not, unfortunately, close at all.

The ELF Championship Game is now set

It will be played in the 28 Black Arena in Klagenfurt, Austria in two weeks on Sunday, September 25th featuring the #1 seeded Hamburg Sea Devils (12-1) vs. the #2 seeded Vienna Vikings (11-2).

These two excellent clubs, the Sea Devils and the Vikings, have not met each other this season.

The NFL Regular Season
kicked off today for most teams

Of course, the only thing of interest
to me is what goes on in the NFC West

The NFC West is decidedly not off to a good start.

Our Los Angeles Rams (0-1) lost to the Buffalo Bills (1-0) on Thursday night, 31-10.

Today, the Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) swamped the Arizona Cardinals (0-1), 44-21. The Chicago Bears (1-0) beat the San Francisco 49ers (0-1), 19-10, in a game played during monsoon conditions.

Thus the Rams, Cardinals and 49ers are all 0-1 in the NFC West at the end of their first week of games.

On Monday night, the NFC West's fourth team the Seattle Seahawks (0-0) will start their 2022 season at home against the Denver Broncos (0-0) with a chance to leap to the head of the division.

A busy, busy American football weekend to be sure.
