A Chance Encounter and a Better Birthday Celebration

Friday, March 20, 2026
What had been a quiet, reading a book day, took an upbeat turn in the evening.

We were scheduled to hold a small birthday celebration for Jacob tonight and thus I was dispatched to our local Toppers Pizza Shop, Jacob's favorite, to pick up two pizzas for the occasion.

Wouldn't you know it, while in line at Toppers I randomly ran into an old friend who I coached at Thousand Oaks H.S. in the mid-1970s.

Steve Swindle

Steven played Wide Receiver in football for us but really excelled on the track and field teams at TOHS.

After high school, Steve served in the U.S. Army and, while stationed in Germany, both played and coached for a EuroBall team, the Osnabruck Silverbacks now known as the Tigers.

Small world.

After his time in the service, Steve embarked in his civilian career as a firefighter in Ventura County.

On a long ago Christmas evening while our family was gathered at our home, my father passed out and required medical attention. After calling 911, who knocks on our door but Fireman Swindle leading his group of paramedics to Dad's aid.

Having his calm, professional demeanor leading the way during this hour of family stress has always been a great comfort to me for which I am forever grateful.

Steve now is retired and lives in Tehachapi. He was in town to also celebrate one of his grandkid's birthdays.

It was nice to catch up with him.

Given these comments, if true,
how would Cuba ever fit in
as our possible 51st state?

Tomorrow the Camarillo Cosmos have a home track meet against the Thousand Oaks Flyers with a total of nearly 600 athletes on the Camarillo H.S. track, stay tuned . . .
