Mon. & Tues., April 6-7, 2026
We begin remembering the joy of Easter Monday in Italy known there as Pasquetta.
In Italy, Easter Sunday is a day to
be shared with family, Pasquetta is
a day to be shared with friends
While days are good ones, I found over the years living in Catania and Varese that Paquetta get togethers are a tad wilder and more fun overall.
Pasquetta is a great reason to be in Italy in the Spring of any year.
We spent our Pasquetta with friends driving them to the Hilton Hotel near LAX to stay the night before flying off to Japan for a vacation the following morning.
Rather than jumping right back into the ferocious L.A. rush hour freeway traffic, we opted to use surface streets over to one of our favorite dining spots, Baby Blues BBQ, in Venice.
We had not been there in a few years due to a fire that shuttered this fine dining hole-in-the-wall spot for 21 months.
We parked across the street in the old Fox Theater's parking lot, probably illegal but it was Pasquetta after all.
I did say that the Fox was OLD
It opened as a mid-century modern landmark theater in 1951 and closed in 1988 due to asbestos issues. It functioned as the "Fox Discount Store" swap meet until that closed in 2023. Plans are now in the works to convert this spot into a Trader Joe's grocery store.
There it was, Baby Blues BBQ
444 Lincoln Blvd., Venice, CA
The interior's post-blaze remodel changed just a few things from the original configuration. My Memphis ribs and Laurie's pulled pork sandwich were top notch as always.
It was a good excuse to easily justify a trip to LAX.
In our last post, I forgot to mention one of our big Easter Sunday events . . .
. . . the NCAA Women's DI Basketball
Championship Game
After looking pedestrian in their Semifinal 54-41 win over Texas, the Bruins were absolutely dominant against the South Carolina squad in the title game.
True indeed, but . . .
Before the NCAA took over running the Women's Basketball March Madness Tournament in 1982, the Lady Bruins were crowned National Champions when they won the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) tournament in 1978.
Six Seniors scored ALL of UCLA's
points in their two Final Four games
One of those Seniors was #11 Gabriella Jaquez. She hails from Camarillo H.S. which created a special interest in the game for us.
A repeat seems to be a long shot, but with NIL and the Transfer Portal, who knows?
Speaking of the joyous Transfer Portal
and Women's Basketball
When the going gets tough, TRANSFER!
On Monday night, the Men's
NCAA DI Championship Game
was much closer than the Women's
Michigan with a solid win
over Connecticut
Again, the joys of the
Transfer Portal
On the news from the net . . .
