I received a text message from one of our former lineman at Rio Mesa H.S., Jorge Zaragoza, who now coaches the Offensive Line for the Spartans J.V. team.
Jorge was inviting me to attend this week's J.V. game today, how could I refuse?
I headed to Rio Mesa H.S. today to attend my 15th football game of the 2025 season with a 4:00 p.m. Kickoff scheduled.

Rio Mesa H.S. Spartans J.V.s
0 Wins - 4 Losses
These two schools usually field solid teams but not, to date, this season. Add to this mix that the two school's Varsity teams have the exact same records as their J.V. squads.
Four teams with a combined 0-14 record. No, this is definitely not business as usual for the Yellowjackets and Spartans.
Still, this J.V. contest between evenly matched clubs had all the earmarkings of a barnburner to me!
It was an overcast day
Justin Schmidt was working the game
He is another former Spartan who played on the Offensive Line for us 32 years ago on the same teams with our son Michael.

. . . for a solid gain
As nice as this play was for the visitors, my potential barnburner was anything but as the Spartans easily overwhelmed the Yellowjackets. Just before the end of the First Half, Rio Mesa scored to extend their lead to 40-0 thus invoking the Mercy Rule.
At the intermission, after saying farewell to Jorge, I invoked my personal rule that states that when the Mercy Rule kicks in, I head out.
I learned from Jorge later that the Spartans cleared the bench in the Second Half in a show of both good coaching and sportsmanship.

Oxnard (0-4) - 0
On to the news from college football . . .
We still have 39 FBS teams
with zero losses
19 of them are not ranked including
the 2-0 Washington Huskies
Leaving a LOT of clubs with one
or more losses at the FBS level
At least two of which now have interim head coaches, UCLA and Virginia Tech.
