We were up and on the road a reasonable hour to start the weekend's Adventure, the drive to Las Vegas to celebrate an early Christmas with our son Andrew, wife Jill and our grandchildren Kevin, Emma, Max and Savannah.
As is our norm, we drove about two hours to the desert city of Victorville where we stopped at our favorite breakfast spot.
Emma Jean's Holland Burger Cafe
It's a historic diner located on old Route 66 that connected Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California beginning in 1926.
The small diner was full but we
scored the last available table
The pancakes were good but the bacon was crispy to absolute perfection!
We drove on and as we approached the California-Nevada state line realized that we were running low on gasoline.
Could we make it to our usual gas station in Primm, Nevada in time to avoid being stranded?
We made it to the highly overpriced Standard gas station just as the Blueberry II informed us that we had ZERO miles left in the tank!
Everything at this desert oasis is expensive, gas was $4.79 a gallon where we bought just a few gallons, enough to get us to Las Vegas where we filled up the tank for just $2.99 a gallon.
The Starbucks in Primm offered coffee for a mere $10 a cup, we passed.
Maybe a donut would be
a good value
They even had donuts with
Joanne Sabolić in mind
What is that?
The cheap donuts went for $4.75 each, again, no sale.
Thank goodness that the restrooms were free.
We arrived at Casa Contreras in the early afternoon and had a nice chat with Andrew and Jill as the kids were with the other half of their parental units.
We watched some college football during our discussions and eventually left to check into our hotel, the Silverton Casino and Lodge.
We had a pleasant surprise on the drive to the hotel.
BOJANGLES!
I fell in love with this fast food restaurant on our recent trip to South and North Carolina. I didn't know that they had any franchises west of the Mississippi.
Chicken biscuits smothered in gravy may be on my agenda Sunday morning.
Monday morning too.
Some Bo Rounds as well.
The Silverton Casino and Lodge is located and connected to one of our go-to shopping spots when we are in Las Vegas.
Bass Pro Shops
We entered a wonderland
Apparently, outdoorsmen tend to be large people, therefore I can find all sorts of clothing that actually fits my plus sized body.
Purchases made, we were off to register at the Silverton.
They greeted us with this large
Christmas tree outside entrance
Jill and Andrew picked us up at 5:00 p.m. and whisked us off to one of their favorite spots, Top Sushi, for an all-you-can-eat dinner.
It was fantastic!
When we returned to the Silverton, we took full stock of their enormous aquarium in the lobby/casino area.
Of course the aquarium had
Christmas ornaments . . .
. . . and stingrays too!

The day was also punctuated by the final three games of the Opening Round of the College Football Playoffs (CFP).
#10 Miami (10-2) at #7 Texas A&M (11-1)
was on while we drove across the
Mojave Desert
Can you say, "DEFENSE"
#10 Miami (11-2) now plays against
#2 Ohio State (12-1) in the Cotton Bowl
#11 Tulane (11-2) at #6 Mississippi (11-1)
Tulane, the American athletic Conference Champion, is not in a Power Four Conference and their inclusion in the CFP is highly controversial, especially as these two schools met earlier this season with Ole Miss dismantling the Green Wave, 45-10.
Let the wailing and gnashing of
teeth begin again at Notre Dame,
BYU, Texas and Vanderbilt
#6 Mississippi (12-1) now faces another
rematch against #3 Georgia (12-1)
in the Sugar Bowl
Georgia handed the Rebels their only loss of the season, 43-35.
#12 JMU (12-1) at #5 Oregon (11-1)
James Madison is the Champion of the Sun Belt Conference, another Group of Five Conference, so there were misgivings about this matchup as well.
The game was not as close as the
score might indicate
Someone cue the Notre Dame, BYU, Texas and Vanderbilt fanbase again.
#5 Oregon (12-1) will meet
#4 Texas Tech (12-1) in Miami's
Orange Bowl
The CFP Opening Round is done,
on to the Quarterfinals on
New Year's Eve and Day
I post this for those of you who
love helmet designs like
Michael and Jacob
We are really looking forward to seeing all of our Desert Clan to celebrate Christmas on Sunday, stay tuned.
