No rest for the wicked, they say.
Well, while I certainly do not consider grandson Jacob to be wicked, he is getting no rest athletically after our East Coast weekend.
Besides his two Camarillo Stingers Pop Warner football practices Monday and Tuesday nights, he also had two Las Colinas Middle School Mustangs flag football games to play on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.
To review, the Mustangs flag team is made up of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Las Colinas was 1-0 on the season as they travelled to take on Monday's opponents, the CAPE Comets, record unknown. The games are played using ten minute quarters with a running clock.
CAPE is an acronym for Camarillo Academy of Progressive Education.
Jacob was on the Kickoff Team
As it turned out this week, Jacob rarely left the field which is quite an accomplishment of a 6th grader.
Patrolling the Flat as an OLB
Mixing it up as a TE
End of the First Quarter
Las Colinas - 14
CAPE - 0
Kick Stepping Pass Protector
He maintained his block just
long enough on this pass play
Reacting to a Comets run
PURSUIT!
Halftime Score
Las Colinas - 22
CAPE - 0
The Mustangs had been in complete control of the first 20 minutes of the game.
LOTS of running around in a
flag football game
Blocking for the run game
HUSTLE!!!
End of the Third Quarter
Las Colinas - 29
CAPE - 0

to pull the flag
Life about to get dusty
and hectic in The Pit

Camarillo Stingers team
Jacob got to play WR too
Final Score
Las Colinas Mustangs - 29
CAPE Comets - 6
A solid win for Las Colinas who are now 2-0 on the season.
With Gabe Covarrubias
Gabe was at the game on Monday in his role as an Administrator at Las Colinas Middle School. I knew him more as a Rio Mesa H.S. Spartans football player in the early 1990s.
It was good catching up with him during the game.
With Brian Roberts
Brian is the CAPE Comets Head Football Coach. He was one of my Criminal Justice students at Rio Mesa H.S. in the late 1990s.
I'm getting old.
On Wednesday, the now 2-0 Mustangs were back at it, at home this time, against the Los Primeros School of Sciences and Arts Panthers, record unknown.
After two blowout wins, the Mustangs were about to meet their measure on this beautiful afternoon.
Jacob on the Kickoff Team
Once again, Jacob rarely left the field today.
Either pursuing the ball carrier
or trying to evade the referee
He really seems to love running
around the field for all 40 minutes
End of the First Quarter
Las Colinas - 0
Los Primeros - 0
The Mustangs were in a battle for the first time this season.
Trying to make a quick
change of direction
Hand-to-hand combat
on a Panther punt
Twin Receivers Right
Good Pass Protection with
his hands on the inside pec
Halftime Score
Los Primeros - 6
Las Colinas - 0
Los Primeros threw a 55 yard TD pass on the last play of the Second Quarter to take the lead.
How would Las Colinas respond to their first deficit of the campaign?
Battle of the number fives
Jacob pulled the flag on this play
Attacking a perimeter run play
End of the Third Quarter
Los Primeros - 6
Las Colinas - 0
Lots of exercise is good for
you, or so I am told
A long pass to Jacob, the first of the
season, fell incomplete unfortunately
More hand-to-hand combat
End of the Fourth Quarter
Los Primeros - 6
Las Colinas - 6
We're going to Overtime!
The Overtime rules are simple, each team gets one play to score either a one or two point PAT. For a one point PAT the ball is placed at about the two yard line, for the two point PAT the ball is placed a tad farther back.
The Panthers had the ball first and opted to go for two. Their pass play was broken up brilliantly by a Mustangs defender.
After holding the Panthers scoreless, the Mustangs opted to go for the easier one point PAT. Their lob pass to the corner was successful, YAHOO!
If the Mustangs had failed to score, each team would have had another play each to try to win the game.
Final Score in Overtime
Las Colinas Mustangs - 7
Los Primeros Panthers - 6
The Mustangs passed a stern test, winning makes everything BETTER!
Las Colinas Mustangs are now
3-0!
It was a good week for the Las Colinas Mustangs flag football team, they'll tee it up again next Thursday at 4:00 p.m. on the road against the Mesa Union Tigers.
News from the net . . .
I believe in tacos
So true and, at times,
hard for some to accept
#8 Oregon Ducks (5-0) at
#7 Washington Huskies (5-0)
They are scheduled to kick things off at 12:30 p.m. this coming Saturday. It should be a barn burning between these two bitter Pacific Northwest rivals.
Can't wait!
I'm in 100% agreement
Oh, to be cruising along the Croatian coast line on a day like today . . .
God Help Us ALL!
The only thing that I can say about these Tennessee Volunteers uniform is that I'd like a pair of their pants to use as pajamas.
