For my 33rd football game of the 2023 season, I joined Michael and Jacob for the short drive to Newbury Park H.S.
It was "Senior Night" for the host Panthers, the final game of the regular season and also a must win game for Newbury Park.
A Panthers win would earn them a share of the 2023 Canyon League Championship with Thousand Oaks H.S. Lancers (7-3, 5-1 Canyon League) whose season ended last week and were enjoying a bye week before starting their C.I.F. Playoff run next weekend.
The Moorpark H.S. Musketeers (8-1, 4-1 Canyon League) could earn a share of the Canyon League crown be defeating the Agoura H.S. Chargers (7-2, 3-2 Canyon League) tonight as well.
On to our game . . .
Camarillo H.S. Scorpions
4 Wins - 5 Losses
2 Wins - 3 Losses Canyon League
at
Newbury Park H.S. Panthers
6 Wins - 3 Losses
4 Wins - 1 Loss Canyon League
Senior Night Tradition
Before the Opening Kickoff, each Panther Senior on the football team was introduced to the crowd and escorted to mid-field by his parents and siblings.
At Halftime of the game, a similar introduction was done for each Senior member of the Panthers Cheerleading and Dance squads.
This is a wonderful tradition in high school sports during the last home game of the regular season in my opinion.
HERE COME THE PANTHERS!
GAME TIME!
N.P. returned the Opening Kickoff
gaining good field position
The Panthers vaunted passing attack
was in full swing
The Panthers Sophomore QB entered the game with a school record tying career 82 TD passes! He broke the tie tonight more than once.
The Scorpions Offense ran the ball
a tad better than they passed tonight
That was understandable as Camarillo's starting QB did not suit up tonight due to injury.
Hitting the RB on a Swing Route
Trench Warfare is always
of interest to me
The Panthers line gave their QB plenty
of time on this play action pass . . .
. . . but he opted to scramble
The Scorpions threatening to score
Screen Pass
Good Scorpions line surge . . .
. . . with a good looking play
action pass fake by their QB
The Panthers were just too much for the Scorpions on this night, bringing the Mercy Rule's running clock into play at the start of the Fourth Quarter.
FINAL SCORE
Newbury Park (7-3, 5-1 Canyon League) - 35
Camarillo (4-6, 2-4 Canyon League) - 6
By the way, the Moorpark Musketeers (9-1, 5-1 Canyon League) had little trouble in defeating the Agoura Chargers (7-3, 3-3 Canyon League) tonight 55-28 to earn their one third share of the Canyon League title with Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks.
In case you are wondering how the Tri-Champions did against each other this season, here is your answer.

September 29, 2023

On our way out of the stadium, we noted these great signs near the entry gate that alluded to some of the Panther alumni who have gone on to have great college and NFL success.
What a WONDERFUL way to sell your
program before ever seeing a down of play
Newbury Park has a great tradition
of producing outstanding QBs
It was a BEAUTIFUL night for
American football yet again!

The 1969 College Football
TV schedule on ABC
That is a total of 39 regular season games that were broadcast in 1969. Remember, the dates with multiple games were not nationally aired games, they were each regionally broadcast.
By contrast, this Saturday alone a total of 38 college games will be broadcast nationally.
Any wonder how TV money has changed the landscape of the college game.

This is one of my two favorite all-time college football publicity photos. Seeing it randomly pop up on Facebook today brought a smile to my face.

This is my other favorite college football publicity photo although it is probably a tad politically incorrect in today's sensitive times.

We end on a somber note from the reporting of this week's Lewiston, Maine mass shooting that claimed 18 lives and wounded 13 others.
Will our nation ever wake up?
