While Sundays are supposed to be days of rest, it certainly was not for me as American football took center stage once again.
Analytics for the Buena H.S. Bulldogs
Ryan Boland is the Head Football Coach at and an alumni of Buena H.S.
I coached him at Buena during the 2002 and 2003 campaigns while serving as the Bulldogs Defensive Coordinator for then Head Coach and Ventura County legend Rick Scott.
In 2010, after Ryan had graduated from Notre Dame University, he joined me as our Offensive Coordinator with Sweden's Hässleholm Hurricanes.
Later we would again coach together, this time at Rio Mesa H.S. in 2011 and 2012 as I recall.
Over the last few years I have volunteered to break down his game videos in an effort to give him an unbiased, third person removed perspective of his team's performances.
I had fallen behind in my duties after last weekend's Army game road trip, so I poured all of my efforts into breaking down both the Bulldogs Rio Mesa H.S. and Ventura H.S. games.
Thus, most of my day revolved around video tape, numbers and analysis of the trends that I was seeing.
Buena is currently 4-5 on the season and 4-3 in Channel League play.
Though busy, I still had news flashes from near and abroad.
Meet the New Head Coach
of Italy's DII Cecina Trappers
Bart is one of the really good guys that I've met while coaching in EuroBall.
An Italian by birth, we first met while we both coached DII clubs in Spain and hit it off immediately. Since then we have coached together five time with the Europe Warriors all-star teams that have played against college and national teams in both Mexico and Austria.
The Trappers hometown of Cecina is located in Tuscany.
During the 2023 DII Italian season the Trappers were 6-3.
I expect them to have a great 2024 Spring season with Bart at the reins.
Go Trappers GO!
After Saturday's big win by the #7 ranked Washington Huskies win over the #8 ranked Oregon Ducks, it only remained to be seen if the Dawgs would climb in the rankings.
WE'RE NUMBER FIVE!
Here are the complete Associated Press Top 25 rankings after this past weekend's games:
I think that Oregon only dropping
to #9 was fitting after that hard fought,
thrilling game in Husky Stadium
Before our fellow Husky fans get too excited about our fine 6-0 start of the 2023 season, remember that we have a long, long way to go before booking our College Football Playoff tickets to either of the Semi-Final games played at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans or Pasadena's Rose Bowl.
The CFP Championship Game will be played in Houston on January 8, 2024.
Before any of those three games happen, the 6-0 Huskies still have to win these tough games:
Oct. 21 vs. Arizona State (1-5)
Oct. 28 at Stanford (2-4)
Nov. 4 at Southern California (6-1)
Nov. 11 vs. Utah (5-1)
Nov. 18 at Oregon State (6-1)
Nov. 25 vs. Washington State (4-2)
If they do run the table, then they will still need to win the final PAC-12 Championship Game to be played in Las Vegas. I would not be surprised if it wasn't an Oregon vs. Washington rematch.
Stay tuned.
Sundays belong to the NFL and
our surprising Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are now 3-3 while the
Arizona Cardinals drop to 1-5
Although I am well aware that Head Coach Sean McVay has won a Super Bowl with the Rams and taken them to the promised land on one other occasion, I think that getting this group to 3-3 may be his best coaching job to date.
Many experts thought that the Rams' young and largely inexperienced roster was poised to tank the season in an effort to get the #1 pick in next year's draft, a.k.a., USC QB Caleb Williams.
If the Rams score two TDs in a
game, fans get a free Jumbo Jack
hamburger with the purchase of
a large drink at Jack in the Box
That seems like an awfully low bar for an NFL team to me.
In Los Angeles Dodgers games, they offer the same deal if Dodgers pitchers can combine for ten strikeouts in a game which seems a tad harder to achieve in my opinion.
On to the weekends Pop Warner football updates . . .
The Gold Coast Youth Football League
will be entering their final week of
regular season games next Saturday
After that, the single elimination playoffs will begin.
