Fri.-Sat., February 6-7, 2026
A fun two days to report on today, let's start with Friday morning's meeting a a nearby high school.
I attended a meeting in the morning to aid in the selection of the five newest members of the Rio Mesa H.S. Sports Hall of Fame.
This is always both a fun but extremely difficult task given the rich Spartans sports history that includes 11 members of the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame, 13 athletes who have earned C.I.F.-Southern Section Player of the Year awards and another 78 athletes that have won 106 individual/relay C.I.F.-Southern Section Championships and 15 California State Championships.
As I said, whittling this talented pool down to just five was extremely difficult but I do believe that we selected a perfectly grand 2026 Induction Class.
This will be the third Induction Class and will join the ten Rio Mesa athletes, coaches and contributors that made up the Classes of 2024 and 2025.
Their names will remain secret for now until they are all notified but I must say, CONGRATULATIONS!
Friday night led us to a
fun dinner with good friends
with UW ties
We met Joanne and Paul Sabolić at a fun spot for a Italian meal in Simi Valley, Viva La Pasta!
As usual, no photos were allowed as both of our wives are in the F.B.I.'s Witness Protection Program.
We had a table reserved at 6:00 p.m. and were the last ones to leave the crowded restaurant three hours later at closing time.
We shared good wines, fine pasta dishes, terrific cheesecake for dessert and most of all, great company catching up on the shenanigans that the four of us have been up to since our last meeting.
Let's do it again soon.
Good Times INDEED!
On Saturday morning, we were back in the dimly lit Monte Vista Middle School gym for another of Jacob's CYBA basketball games. His Bulls (1-1) were facing the Warriors, record unknown.
As usual, the game started with a tip
The Warriors looked tough
"Rebound that basketball!"
Is Jacob's defensive move with his left hand legal?
As his Dad said about it, "It's merely a flesh wound."
Jacob and a blue clad Warrior
battling in the paint
Bulls on a Fast Break
Although the Bulls had several good looks at the basket, they were cold to say the least.
Warriors on a Fast Break of their own
The Warriors, on the other hand, were making their shots.
Jacob swatting away this shot
Hands
Deny!
That was a rough start
End of the First Quarter
Warriors 8 - Bulls 0
The Warriors lit it up
in the Second Quarter
Bulls Point Guard trying to
find an open man
Not good, could the Bulls regroup?
Halftime Score
Warriors 20 - Bulls 4
That was too easy
Still, the Bulls players were enjoying the competition and would go on to play a much better Second Half.
Way to get up for that Bulls rebound!
And another
Good Defense with a hand in the
face of the Warriors shooter
Bulls layup for TWO!
Shoot it Jacob
He would score six points today.
Pressure Defense
As he shot this he said just loud
enough for me to hear,
"OH MY GOD!"
Why is that Warrior smiling?
Better, the Third Quarter score was 8-8
but the Bulls were still in a deep hole
End of the Third Quarter
Warriors 28 - Bulls 12
The Warriors did a good job all
game long passing the ball until
they found a good shot
11 on 11
Smooth Warriors shooter
Bulls pushing the ball up the court
A good inside shot
Jacob pulled down this rebound
All eyes UP!
The Battle in the Paint never ends
Driving
Setting up
Jacob bringing the ball into
the front court
Shoot or pass?
Excellent elevation
Warriors Fast Breaking yet again
A long day for our Bulls
Final Score
Warriors 37 - Bulls 22
The Bulls played much better in the Second Half which was good to see.
On the plus side the Second Half score was Bulls 18 - Warriors 17.
On the negative side, the Bulls only gave up 39 points in their first two games combined before allowing 37 points today.
Next Saturday will be another day for our beloved Bulls who will take on the Lakers.
As you may know, there is a BIG American football game being played on Sunday.
That's right, in Spanish DII, the
Sueca Ricers (0-1-1) at the mean
looking Murcia Cobras (1-2)
Go Cobras GO!
Oh, there is another American football game going on Sunday it seems.
Players that will play in
Super Bowl LX will all make
their high schools PROUD!
12 non-Power Four Conference
alums are in this MVP group
Big announcement, one of the
Rams-49ers games next year will
be played in Melbourne, Australia
The Washington Huskies picked
up a transfer QB from Stanford
The old European League of Football
is breaking up into two new circuits
this Summer
I still don't think that this noble experiment is economically sustainable over the long haul.
Saturday's Spanish DII results
Boadilla Vikings (2-1) - 14
Madrid Capitals (0-3) - 6
Alcobendas Cavaliers (3-0) - 13
Alcorcón Smilodons (2-1) - 10
Alicante Sharks (3-0) - 27
Alicante Thunder (0-3) - 14
España . . .
So much great food,
SO LITTLE TIME!
I hope that you strongly consider
this before our country slides
deeper into the abyss
