Seattle is a Nice City

Tuesday, July 12, 2022

We thankfully slowed down our hectic pace today and just enjoyed the good and simple life that Seattle has to offer.

Mallory and Chester

This is Mallory, our hosts' Mark and Susie Johnson's younger daughter and Chester is her beau.

I add their picture to this post today because, due to the fine food and witty repartee at our Skillet Diner dinner table celebrating her birthday the other night with them, I absentmindedly forgot to take one.

That was definitely a good time indeed!

colorful building in Seattle's
University District

We were shopping for any and all University of Washington clothing and memorabilia at the UW Bookstore.

We continue to seriously support the local economy on this trip to the Pacific Northwest.

With several new purple and gold items now in our possession, we decided to eat lunch in style at home with some take-out from one of Seattle's finest dining establishments.

The four of us had Dick's
traditional order of burgers and fries

The fact that the bag had grease stains
was a sign of the deliciousness inside

After our scrumptious burger banquet,
Laurie and I took the Metro downtown

This deep underground Metro station is the right next to the University of Washington's Husky Stadium and is an easy five minute walk from the Johnson's Montlake Cut manor.

The round trip fare for each of us Senior Citizens on this efficient mode of transportation was a mere $2.00. Such a deal.

We got off at the Westlake exit
which sits under this famed
department store in the heart
of downtown Seattle

About five blocks from the Westlake
Metro stop we neared our trip's goal . . .

. . . Seattle's famed Pike Place Market

We did purchase a bunch of flowers
to bring back to Susie as a small
token for her generosity this past week
in sharing her husband Mark with us

Lots of restaurants in the Market

See what I mean?

The seafood in the Pike Place Market
has earned a well deserved reputation

Again, see what I mean?

The fruit and vegetable stands
are enticing too

You can find just about anything
you want in the Market

The Post Alley Gum Wall is near
the Pike Place Market and is a
big tourist attraction

No, we did not add to this art work today.

Who is she?

Earlier this week when we first saw her while returning from our ferry ride to Bainbridge Island, Susie said she looked like the character Maya from a recent episode we all watched of the British TV crime drama Grantchester.

She may be correct.

So that's what he looks like

It was HOT so we opted for an adult
beverage at the Pike Brewing Company

Interesting ambience

Happy wife, happy life

Even a street musician that was playing
his guitar artfully in the Market
comes to this brewery on his breaks

Two bikes built in 1895 are a nice
touch for this brewery that likes
any and all cycling enthusiasts

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

One final tour of the Pike Place Market
after rehydrating successfully

So many things for the senses
to enjoy at every turn

I liked the fine Art Deco metalwork on the
old Bon Marché flagship department
store building that dates from 1929

The Bon Marché opened in Seattle in 1890 and merged with the Macy's chain under their name in 2005. It was a right on our way back to the Westlake Metro stop and our ride back to the UW-Husky Stadium Metro station.

An artsy shadow on the
Montlake Bridge as we walked

The Montlake Cut
viewed one more time

For our next repast, we head to Capital Hill to dine at the Bar Cotto owned by Johnson family friend Brandon Barnato.

DAMN!

A great spritz cocktail, prepared by Brandon himself, sent our Italian dining experience off on a high flying mode.

We opted to share whatever random Italian dishes Brandon brought to us and were far from disappointed.

Fabulous Salumi charcuterie boards led to crisp Caesar salad, delicious Brussel sprouts (I can't believe that I just wrote that, but it was true), rich gorgonzola gnocchi, incredible peperonata pasta, a solid Margherita pizza and an amazing slice of tiramisu for dessert.

In my opinion as a near professional foodie, this was the best meal that we've had in this now weeklong Food Festival that we have shared in the greater Seattle megalopolis.

Needless to say, the next time you are in Seattle, you really need to eat at the Bar Cotto located at 1546 15th Avenue.

News from EuroBall . . .

It's OFFICIAL!

The 2022 Italian DII Champion Varese Skorpions are going to be part of the DI Italian Football League in 2023.

As for Italy's flag football
fortunes in The World Games . . .

We have mixed results to report.

The Men's Team is ROLLING with nothing but wins so far, here is the damage inflicted so far:
Italy 28 - Germany 27
Italy 33 - Mexico 28
Italy 34 - Austria 27
Italy 41 - France 38

The 4-0 Italian squad will face the 2-2 Mexican contingent again in a semi-final game on Wednesday.

The Italian Women are having a tougher go of it in Birmingham:
Italy 25 - Brazil 19
Japan 19 - Italy 14
Mexico 49 - Italy 0
Panama 33 - Italy 13
Italy 18 - France 13

The 2-3 Italian Women will play the 3-2 Japanese team in a rematch in the tournament's fifth place game on Wednesday.

Since most of the past week's adventure in the State of Washington has revolved around food, I leave you today with this . . .

Some people can be so darn right
MEAN!
