An Overall Quiet Sunday With a Mini-Reunion

Sunday, July 10, 2022

After all of the hubbub of the last few days, today was one of relative, much needed peace and quiet.

Most of the morning was spent getting the Johnson's Camano Island cabin back in ship-shape order after our long weekend in this slice of the Pacific Northwest's Heaven.

We did a little communing with nature as well.

DO NOT EAT THESE BERRIES!

The fact that they are poisonous is a real issue for the uninitiated picker who are trying to find the wild blueberries, blackberries and raspberries that grow prolifically on Camano Island.

We spotted a beaver pond
near the Johnson's cabin
on our way to . . .

. . . this drive-through cafe getting
much needed java for Susie and Laurie

With the cabin restored to its near pristine condition once again, we headed back to Seattle to take part in a birthday dinner for the Johnson's daughter Mallory.

But first . . .

We stopped in Woodinville for lunch

As we approached our designated lunch spot, the Woodin Creek Kitchen and Tap, guess who we ran into?

Why none other than former Westlake High School football legend Dave Baillie and his lovely wife Donna.

Susie and Laurie were jumping
for joy when they saw the Baillies

OK, truth be told . . .

We had set this meeting up in advance and we spent over an hour catching up over some beer and appetizers.

Hopefully it was a precursor of more fun things to come at the 1982 Westlake H.S. Football Reunion in September. Dave was a Senior on that club and earned well deserved All-Marmonte League and All-Ventura County honors for his performance at Defensive Tackle.

As a player, Dave had a certain presence about him that in one-on-one and/or three-on-three drills made several other Warriors re-think life on the practice field.

Many of his teammates would wisely count their relative position in line to insure that they did not have to face him in these types of physically demanding drills.

We spent over an hour reliving shared old times. What great fun!

As a coach it always makes me incredibly proud to see a former player that has become a good husband and father. It was also wonderful to hear that he also has given back to his community by coaching generations of young athletes in football, lacrosse and baseball.

After all of these years, I finally had a beer with Dave . . .
AWESOME!

On to our dinner in Seattle's
Capitol Hill area

The Skillet Diner has perhaps the
GREATEST grilled cheese sandwich
that I've ever enjoyed

It includes brie, cheddar and American cheeses with a terrific dash of bacon jam all on a brioche.

INCREDIBLE!

The view from the Johnson's
backyard overlooking the
Montlake Cut

ANDIAMO INDEED!

Now, let's go back to the parallel universe that is American football . . .

Seventh?

Our Huskies definitely need to step up our game.

SOON!

Our old club in Switzerland
Thun Tigers had a rough season ender

The now 11-0, #1 seeded Bern Grizzlies did a number on our beloved #4 seeded, 5-6 Tigers.

The #2 seeded Calanda Broncos (9-2) held serve against the #3 seeded Basel Gladiators (7-4).

Swiss Bowl XXXVI
is this Saturday

Now on to Team Italy's Men's and
Women's Flag Football Results

The Women's Team only played
one game today

It was a solid 25-19 victory over Team Brazil.

The Italian Men played a
double-header on our Day of Rest

Victories over Germany, 28-27, and Mexico, 33-27 were a great way to start the World Games.

Week 6 Results from
the European League of Football

The ELF is now at the half way point of the campaign. With all teams now only having six more games, the path to the playoffs is still open for several clubs. The four team playoffs will consist of the three Conference champions plus the team rate as the best second place club.

At this point, only the high flying
5-1 Hamburg Sea Devils would
be in the playoffs

The 6-0 Vienna Vikings would make
the playoffs along with the 4-2
Tirol Raiders

The Raiders and the Southern Conference's Rhein Fire are both 4-2 but the tie breaker is overall point differential.

The Raiders have outscored their opponents 190-117, a difference of 73 points.

The Fire have played tighter contest, outpointing their rivals 144-123, a difference of only 21 points.

As it stands now, only the
5-1 Barcelona Dragons would
be in the post-season

There is still a LOT of football to be played before the playoffs start in mid-September.

Week 7 ELF Schedule
Berlin Thunder (3-3) at Leipzig Kings (2-4)
Stuttgart Surge (0-6) at Wroclaw Panthers (2-4)
Cologne Centurions (2-4) at Frankfurt Galaxy (3-3)

Week 7 Byes
Vienna Vikings (6-0)
Barcelona Dragons (5-1)
Hamburg Seas Devils (5-1)
Tirol Raiders (4-2)
Rhein Fire (4-2)
Istanbul Rams (0-6)

Finally, this from the net . . .

I ALWAYS think about
this before going anywhere

Life was GOOD today!
