Last Full Day in Beautiful Gijón, Asturias, España

Saturday, April 5, 2025

A bit of a sad day, our last full one in Gijón before flying home Sunday morning.

It was a day just made for packing, downsizing and strolling the streets one last time.

Dropping off another two . . .

. . . bundles of clothing for charity

We had dropped off two other bundles last week before heading to Marrakech.

It was time to discard the old to make space in our luggage for the many treasures that we were bringing home.

One last breakfast at Café Van Gogh

Random tributes to beautiful Asturias

The plaza in front of the
Palacio de Revillagigedo

The Palacio was hosting a
photographic exhibit on life in
Gijón from 1858-1992

We entered only to find that, once
again, there was no entry fee

Where did these horses come from?

Fortunately, Laurie had a sugar packet
in her pocket from the Café Van Gogh

An OLD bicycle shop

Cameras throughout the years

My iPhone camera is a bit
less wieldy

Poster of a similar exhibit
held in Gijón in 1909

Laurie leading the way to the
next exhibit room

Look at those faces

What stories could they tell if given the chance?

The Plaza de Toros with the precursor
of the ever reliable #1 bus line on the left

Mariners LB/SS Samu's band

That's Samu sitting down with his bass guitar.

Two extremely . . .

. . . interesting faces

Quini, on the left, Sporting Gijón's
all-time greatest player

Sporting lost to CD Tenerife tonight at home, 3-1.

1923 Bicycle Race

1933 Gijón Boxing Club

1925 Soccer Team

Luis Rodriguez, Boxer

Gijón is indeed a beach city

Siesta time for the workers

Tall Sidra pours are a
long standing tradition in Asturias

A bake-off perhaps

An early Trump rally scene?

No, just fascist salutes for General Franco's regime in the early 1950s.

Family fun at dinner

Asturian bowling pin game

Boys and their pick axes

Celebrating a new bus in Gijón

My artsy take on a palace banister

It was an extremely worthwhile
exhibit, you really should attend

As we walked through the photo exhibit we started to hear a loud din coming from the plaza. What was it?

Why a political demonstration,
what else?

Workers of Gijón . . .

. . . UNITE!

Another rally to fight global fascism
is scheduled for next Friday,
nice poster boy

Meanwhile, on Plaza Mayor about
75 meters away . . .

. . . there was a party going on!

It would be a loud night on Plaza Mayor

Moving on another 50 meters and we
found a group of tourists and their guide

Laurie and La Playa de San Lorenzo

The tidal pools were underwater

Virgen de la Covadonga on the side
of the Basilica del Sagrado Corazon

Tinto de Verano with our lunch

Carajillos for dessert
at the Transporte Bar

After another round of packing, we headed back out for a final dinner with friends.

We were meeting on the same square
where we started the day

Sunset

Who is that child?

A safe turned into a table at the
Varsovia Bar, GREAT idea!

Our Mariners Center, Mikel, works
at the Varsovia Bar and . . .

. . . pours a fascinating glass
of wine for Laurie

Mikel is one of the really
GOOD GUYS!

With left the Varsovia with the idea
of having pizza at that wonderful
dive spot, Pizza Wow!

After the Varsovia our party of
ten needed a stroll

a different angle

As it turned out, the demand for tables on a Saturday night far outstripped the supply of tables. With several reservations ahead of us we opted to head back down the hill to Carbones, an Italian food mecca.

Reservations at a dive pizza shop, who knew?

Adrianne, Ruben, Edu, Juan Carlos,
Pedro, Kike, Paula, Daniel,
Laurie and George

A good season was coming to a close tonight and we were extremely happy to share it with these good friends.

We decided that one last late night walk along the seaside was a good idea after our wonderful meal.

Harbor lights . . .

. . . never get old

Gracias Mariners Family, we had a wonderful three months living in Gijón and exploring Asturias!
