Thurs. & Fri., November 2-3, 2023
I visited my college roommate, Loren Brucker, in a hospital in Orange County who is successfully recovering from open heart surgery on Thursday. He, his wife Sandy and the two children are all doing great and were found in good spirits.
Thank goodness!
After visiting my Mother in her assisted living facility on Friday where she continues to peacefully decline, I opted for another crazy afternoon/evening of high school football. These would be my 35th and 36th games that I've attended this season.
I was scheduled to meet with Joanne and Paul Sabolić (correct Croatian accenting) for dinner at 5:30 pm before attending their son's playoff game at 7:00 pm.
I found out that due to a lack of lights, there was another playoff game scheduled at 2:30 pm only about a 15 minute drive from our scheduled dinner rendezvous.
GAMES ON!
What I was about to experience was not one but two C.I.F.-Los Angeles City Section Division I First Round Playoff Games.
It should be noted that the top eight teams in this section play in the Open Division Playoffs which start next week. Division I therefore is comprised of what are deemed to be through a complicated Power ranking system to be the next best 16 teams in Los Angeles.
Let's take a look at Game #1's opponents . . .
King/Drew Magnet H.S.
of Medicine & Science Golden Eagles
3 Wins - 7 Losses
Third Place in the Coliseum League
#10 seeded in the Division I Playoffs
at
Hamilton H.S. Yankees
5 Wins - 5 Losses
Third Place in the Western League
#7 seeded in the Division I Playoffs
Being a Senior Citizen does
have a few perks
What a SNAZZY t-shirt on this
Hamilton Yankees ticket seller!
A grass field with a four lane dirt
track, welcome to L.A. City football
AT ITS FINEST!
Hamilton in green, these two teams
had several HUGE players
The action was hot and heavy even
though the First Quarter ended
knotted up at 0-0
Lots of punts and even more fumbles
were the Rules of the Day
A solid King/Drew Punt Return
Both clubs relied on
solid ground games
King/Drew defense in Hot Pursuit
King/Drew finished STRONG!
After that scoreless First Quarter, things got WILD in West Los Angeles.
FINAL SCORE
King/Drew (4-7) - 36
Hamilton (5-6) - 30
On to dinner . . .
This was a solid choice via the
Yelp App for Mexican food located at
4651 West Adams Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90016
I had the enjoyable meal that I expected hearing all about the Sabolić's recent, wonderful two week vacation in beautiful Croatia.
It was time for Part II of my twi-night high school football playoff doubleheader. The Sabolić's son, Jason, is the Head Football Coach at El Camino Real H.S.
El Camino Real H.S. Royals
3 Wins - 7 Losses
Fourth Place in the West Valley League
#13 seeded in the Division I Playoffs
at
Dorsey H.S. Dons
4 Wins - 6 Losses
Coliseum League Co-Champions
#4 seeded in the Division I Playoffs
The Dons have a long tradition
of glorious, high level football
The lights were dim but listening
to the Dons PA Announcer was worth
the price of admission
He had a deep voice like Barry White's, was more of a play-by-play announcer and had tons of folksy sayings all night long.
What a treat he was, he helped just a tad to overcome the dim stadium lights and lack of a well located scoreboard.
We had ourselves another 0-0 First Quarter score before things heated up in the final three stanzas.
El Camino Real in their
powder blue jerseys tried to run
and pass equally
Dorsey, on the other hand,
rarely passed the ball
As is usually the case, turnovers, especially a Dorsey 50 yard, scoop and score fumble recovery for the decisive Defensive TD, was the difference.
FINAL SCORE
Dorsey (5-6) - 32
El Camino Real (3-8) - 16
Well, it was indeed as much fun as I anticipated.
Now we move on to Saturday's Game #37 of the season at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the #5 Washington Huskies (8-0) at the #20 Southern California Trojans (7-2).
GO DAWGS!
