A Mixed Emotions Couple of Days

Sun. & Mon., November 5-6, 2023
First and foremost, our family thanks all of you who have reached out to us these last few days with words of kindness on the passing of our mother, Chuny.

They are all greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile, this blog has now become quite therapeutic for me.

After Saturday's Washington-USC game, Mark and Susie Johnson stayed with us and were there when the news of our mother's passing came late in the evening. Their caring support was a much needed comfort to us.

Before their return flight to Seattle on Sunday night, we headed up to Ventura for a splendid Italian lunch at Cafe Fiore and then some shopping at a surprise street fair and the usual quirky, interesting downtown Ventura shops.

Keeping our minds occupied certainly helped.

Did I say quirky?

Of course, a main topic of discussion
the last two days centered on Saturday's
Huskies 52-42 victory over USC

USC QB Caleb Williams played at
a level worthy of his Heisman Trophy
winning status

Did I mention that the Huskies
beat USC on Saturday?

USC's much maligned Defensive Coordinator, Alex Grinch, was fired on Sunday after this latest attempt to stop an opponent.

The 7-3 Trojans have given up an average of 34.5 points per game this year which is indeed terrible on its own.

It got much worse though in the last six games where the USC defense, and I use that term quite loosely, had surrendered 279 points for a whopping 46.5 points per game average!

Sadly, a change had to be made and it was. While USC fans were jubilant about the move, it must still be remembered that a veteran coach and his family have just had their lives turned upside down.

Grinch has coached college football at nine NCAA DI colleges in his 22 year career, thus changes are nothing new to him and the family. I'm sure that he'll get another chance to coach in 2024.

Speaking of points allowed by USC, Mark Johnson came up with an interesting fact on Monday about the 86 game series between the Huskies and the Trojans.

According to Mark's source, before last Saturday's game, the most points ever scored by the UW against USC was 34. On Saturday, the Huskies had scored 35 points by Halftime on their way to an all-time series high of 52 points by the end of the game!

I just had to research this information further and I'll be darned if Mark wasn't 100% correct.

Historically, the Huskies have had a difficult time scoring against the Trojans having now scored 28 points or more a mere eight times in this now 86 game series that started in 1923.

Here are those eight games:
1949 UW lost 28-40
1950 UW won 28-13
1960 UW won 34-0
1977 UW won 28-10

1990 UW won 31-0
2010 UW won 32-31
2019 UW won 28-14
2023 UW won 52-42

I love how the Huskies name a
Scout Team Player of the Week
after each game

A great morale boosting incentive for those who serve in relative anonymity weekly I'm sure.

RB Dillon Johnson's
USC Game Stat Line
26 carries, 256 yards, 9.8 avg., 4 TDs

Mark and Susie Johnson claim him as their nephew.

The all-important Special Forces

Did I mention that we were part
of the 72,243 fans in attendance
when the UW beat USC 52-42 Saturday?

No changes to the Top Five of
this week's AP Poll

A new and all important College Football Playoff poll will be announced on Tuesday night.

The Huskies road to the playoffs is still extremely fraught with danger when you look at the above poll.

The last three regular season Husky games are:
Nov. 11 vs. #13 Utah (7-2)
Nov. 18 at #12 Oregon State (7-2)
Nov. 25 Apple Cup vs. Washington State (4-5)

Despite their record, NEVER discount Washington State in an Apple Cup game!

If we manage to win all three of these games, then the most likely opponent at this time for the PAC-12 Championship Game to be played in Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium on Dec. 1st would be a powerhouse, heavyweight rematch with #6 Oregon (8-1).

The Huskies beat the Ducks, 36-33, in Seattle on October 14th, in an instant classic of a game to be sure.

We were all excited to hear of
Army's huge 23-3 upset of previously
undefeated Air Force on Saturday

On Sunday, our battered L.A. Rams
travelled to "The Frozen Tundra"
of Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Packers (3-5)
beat the Rams (3-6) in a game
between two struggling clubs

The Arab American Football season
is now going full steam!
Jeddah Al-Baharah - 26
Dubai Spartans - 0

Much needed giggles from the net . . .

This could definitely happen to me

is yet again TACO TUESDAY!

Did I mention that Washington beat USC 52-42 last Saturday?
