Super Bowl LVI

Sunday, February 13, 2022

At last, it was time for America's Numero Uno sporting event, the NFL's Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood, California's SoFi Stadium.

Who was playing, you ask?

The NFC Champion
Los Angeles Ram (15-5)
vs.
The AFC Champion
Cincinnati Bengals (13-7)

Hopefully, the game would be as competitive and exciting as the previous six playoffs had been this season.

The 1:30 p.m. Hawaiian time Kickoff
was most enjoyable!

This map reminded me of the seven Super Bowls that I had watched over the years in Europe that started at 12:30 a.m. on Super Bowl Monday.

To review these European all-nighters, I was in Catania, Sicily for Super Bowl XLII (Giants 17 - Patriots 14) and Super Bowl XLIII (Pittsburgh 27 - Arizona 23).

While living in Lyon, France I got to watch Super Bowl XLVII (Ravens 34 - 49ers 31).

I watched Super Bowl XLIX (New England 28 - Seattle 24) in Murcia, Spain.

Finally, I enjoyed three more of these all-nighters in Varese, Italy, Super Bowl LII (Philadelphia 41 - New England 33), Super Bowl LIII (Patriots 13 - Rams 3 NUTS!) and Super Bowl LIV (Kansas City 31 - San Francisco 20).

They have all been fun but the 4:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. finishes made for some decidedly unproductive Mondays.

The afternoon start to America's Game gave us time to enjoy another morning near the Pacific Ocean.

I started with my usual morning
walk and reading session with
this marvelous view

I got to thinking, how many former University of Washington Huskies were on today's Super Bowl rosters?

Well, the answer was five

The Bengals had TE Drew Sample and QB Jake Browning while the Rams roster included FS Taylor Rapp, DL Greg Gaines and OL Coleman Shelton.

Back in Camarillo, California
Jacob was READY for a WIN!

It turned out to be a good game
that came down to a GREAT
Fourth Quarter drive by the Rams

This Matthew Stafford pass proved to be . . .

. . . the GAME WINNER to, who else,
Cooper Kupp!

Kupp would be named the game's MVP but the game was not over, the Bengals still had about 1:25 left in the game to either tie the game back up or win it outright in regulation.

Not going to happen on DT Aaron Donald's watch. He sacked Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow on a fourth down play to seal the Los Angeles Rams first Super Bowl win in three tries. The Rams organization did win Super Bowl XXXIV (Rams 23 - Titans 16) while representing St. Louis.

In the pre-Super Bowl era, the Los Angeles Rams won the 1951 NFL Championship (Rams 24 - Browns 17) while the Cleveland Rams won the 1945 NFL Championship (Rams 15 - Redskins 14).

WHAT A GAME!

The Lombardi Trophy
comes to Los Angeles

It was a GRAT day to be a
Los Angeles Rams fan!

Meanwhile, in another Hemisphere . . .

. . . there were two more Spanish
Serie A games played on Sunday

The Eastern Conference game was the headliner as the upstart Barberá Rookies (2-0) were challenging the traditional bad boys of Spanish American football, the Badalona Dracs (2-0) for supremacy. The Dracs have ten National Championship trophies on display in their headquarters.

In a stunner, the Rookies calmly dismantled the Dracs, 35-20.

The lone Western Conference game was between two clubs looking for some breathing room as the Gijón Mariners (0-2) were on the road vs. the Fuengirola Potros (0-1).

In what turned out to be a good game, the Mariners outlasted the Potros, 30-27.
