A Lazy Day on Maui, Is There Any Other Kind?

Saturday, February 12, 2022

Sometimes, all you want to do is a whole lot of NOTHING.

Today was one of those days. Nothing was planned, we just let things naturally unfold.

I was up before everyone else
as is the norm

I didn't want to wake up the others, so I went for my morning constitutional along the shore until I found this nice spot to sit and read for a spell.

The Sun rose once again in the east

I enjoy seeing the beach gradually come to life as more and more early risers joined me in welcoming a new day.

It promised to be another
BEAUTIFUL day in paradise!

I brought back some delicious Maui cinnamon buns for us all to share and Kevin made quick work of his. The boy eats a ton but is still so skinny.

The joys of youth.

I checked on-line to see what happened in Spain while we were sleeping in Serie A play.

Serie A had two games scheduled
for Saturday and I was involved
in both of them

The first contest was between the Serie A's last two undefeated Western Conference clubs.

In 2015, I was the Head Coach of the Murcia Cobras (2-0) who were on the road playing the Osos Rivas (2-0).

Rivas is a suburb of Madrid and I coached the Osos for two months in 2016 in a couple of capacities during their preseason. My tasks were to coach fundamentals to the Osos offensive linemen on both the Senior and Junior teams and to Coach the Coaches on all levels of the Osos program for our good friend Jesús Sánchez who was then in his first season as their Head Coach.

No contest as it turned out

The Osos Rivas (3-0) are now the definite team to beat in the West.

Murcia (2-1) is still in the hunt for a playoff spot but will have to step up their game in the rematch in Murcia between these two clubs later this season.

The other game on Saturday also had me emotionally involved on both sidelines.

The L'Hospitalet Pioners (1-2) were hosting the Mallorca Voltors (0-2).

During the 2021 season, I served as the Pioners Analytics Coach during their undefeated run to the Serie B National Championship which elevated them to Serie A play this campaign. The Pioners Head Coach last year was another good friend, Bart Iaccarino. Last year Bart coached the Pioners in the Winter and Spring and then embarked on being the Head Coach of the Barcelona Dragons in the European League of Football's inaugural season that Summer. In was a tad too time consuming to coach both clubs, so Bart opted to give up his duties with the Pioners to concentrate on the Dragons in 2022.

That left me with no dog in the hunt in Spanish football in 2022.

Enter once again Jesús Sánchez. He became the Head Coach of the Mallorca Voltors and asked me to be his Analytics Coach in 2022. The season has seen a rough start for our Voltors who suffered a last second loss to the Zaragoza Hurricanes (1-2) before being drubbed by the undefeated Barberá Rookies (2-0).

The Voltors had back-to-back bye weeks to prepare for their game yesterday in Barcelona against the Pioners. In breaking down Mallorca's practice videos the last few weeks I saw definite improvement in the players techniques and knowledge of the playbook.

Now, if only this would translate into success on the game field.

YAHOO!
It did indeed

I know how hard Jesús works at his craft given our time living together with our families when we were both coaching the Osos Rivas in 2015.

This win moves the Voltors (1-2) into a third place tie in Serie A's Eastern Conference with the Zaragoza Hurricanes (1-2) who had a bye this weekend.

We did have one stop to make before heading to the sand yet again.

Where you ask?

Why to the famed Huli Huli Chicken BBQ but of course. We picked up a whole chicken and a slab and a half of pork ribs to share on Sunday during the Super Bowl.

I wonder who is playing?

Much of the afternoon was
spent on the beach below this
mini-park frolicking in the surf

Relaxing . . .

An octopus was the idea behind
someone's sand art today

Someone told us that the Sun sets in the West in Hawaii every day and that we should go watch it happen on our West facing beach.

So we did

You know, it was indeed a
pleasant sight

We were hungry, what to do?

Maui Tacos hit the spot

We brought home chicken and pork street tacos and an excellent steak quesadilla.

Life id GOOD!

Reading Is FUNdamental!

Greeley's books are always
good, fun reads

This one was a perfect "Summer at the Beach" read in the middle of Maui's intense Winter.

Oh, that's right, the
Los Angeles Rams play in the
Super Bowl on Sunday

The 1:30 p.m. Hawaiian time kickoff against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday is way more appealing than all of those 12:30 a.m. starts on Super Bowl Mondays in Europe over the many years.

GO RAMS GO!
