Lots More of Nothing in Maui Today

Thursday, March 7, 2024
A quiet, serene day with not much to report, but then again, isn't that what a vacation in Maui is truly all about?

After our morning coffee run to Starbucks, our group split up as Mark and Susie had to attend what would be a contentious home owners association meeting to discuss several costly expenditures to renovate their entire 400+ unit condo complex.

Laurie and I opted for the much more stimulating 1.6 mile stroll back to our shared condo headquarters.

As local law clearly stipulates, we made several stops along the way.

We really should give this place a try

Koi ponds are required by Hawaii
state laws in most public gathering spots

We stopped to smell . . .

. . . the numerous hibiscus along our route

The South Maui Gardens had a crafts
fair and we had disposable income

Supporting the arts while keeping Laurie happy has its up side.

I denied no one three times this morning

Our wee stretch of the legs was good for both our bodies and  souls.

Our plan this afternoon was to head
across the street from the condo again
to this beach to vegetate

The local trade winds had other plans for us.

With the oceanside sands blowing around, the ladies opted to sit by the condo's pool while the boys stayed indoors to read and work a bit.

In the evening, we were joined by the Johnson's delightful friend Lindy for dinner at our favorite spot on Maui.

Upcountry's Kula Bistro

The Coconut Shrimp appetizer
tasted even better than it looked

Years ago I fell in love with the Kula Bistro's seafood pasta because of their truly amazing but mysterious rich, thick Oriental sauce.

Mark and Susie tease me because I always order it. Why not, it has never even come close to disappointing me.

Until tonight.

While the seafood and pasta were prepared to perfection, the Oriental sauce was thin, runny and lacked the pizzazz that I fell in love with on all of those previous trips up the base of the Haleakalā volcano's mountain.

To be clear, this seafood pasta was still a solid choice for dinner but it simply fell short of my expectations.

The silver lining to tonight's disappointing main course is that in future visits to the Kula Bistro, I now feel free to actually read and explore the menu for other delicious dinner items.

There was still hope in those
refrigerated counters

The Kula Bistro houses dozens of incredible desserts in them and they all looked and sounded insanely good.

Mark picked a caramel pecan ice cream pie with a graham cracker crust for us all to share.

Mark, you are going to share that, right?

He did and it was amazingly good and rich. So rich that the five of us could not finish the whole thing.

It was a stunning upset indeed!

Back on the Continent . . .

The 1-0 Varese Skorpions will travel
to Rome on Sunday to play the
0-1 Lazio Marines

It will be one of four Italian Football League DI games this weekend.

Last Sunday's traditional Catania
Elephants DIII post -game team photo

I spotted at least two coaches and five players who were all players with the team when I started my EuroBall coaching career with the Elephants back in 2008.

Seventeen seasons later and their passion for the game still burns as intensely as ever.

Yes, that is Sicily's beautiful Mt. Etna volcano in the background.

Spain's Serie A has a full slate
of games this week as well

Saturday's two games are the big ones this weekend as the Eastern Conferences top two teams, the Badalona Dracs (40) and Zaragoza Hurricane (3-2), square off in Barcelona.

The Western Conference's top team, the Las Rozas Black Demons (4-0) will host the third place Coslada Camioneros (3-2) in Madrid on Saturday.
