A Movie and a Ball Game

Thu.-Sun., February 15-18, 2024
A blog, when all is said and done, is really just a diary of a person's life and thoughts. Some days are full of wonder, most are simply ordinary.

These past four days were mostly the latter.

We did go to the movies on Saturday

No, it is not going to challenge The Godfather or Citizen Kane on the American film Institute's all-time best movies list.

This spy film was total, mindless, fun entertainment which was exactly what we wanted at a Saturday matinee.

On Sunday, it was time for non-NIL,
non-scholarship NCAA DIII Baseball

It was the 2024 Opening Weekend for CLU Kingsmen baseball. On Friday they opened their season with a 7-1 victory over the University of Puget Sound Loggers.

On an overcast, drizzly Sunday the 1-0 Kingsmen were taking on the 2-1 Loggers again at high noon.

We arrived at CLU's Ullman Stadium
just as the two clubs finished their
respective warm-ups

Laurie almost at the stadium's
entrance where, as with all CLU
sports, there was no entry fee

The view from our seats of
George "Sparky" Anderson Field

The CLU players raking and tending to the field's last minute needs just before . . .

. . . the first pitch of the game

CLU's hefty starting pitcher was a Senior,
John Frazier who is 6'3" - 250 lbs.

Even though he consistently went deep into counts with most of the Loggers batters that he faced, he still pitched five scoreless innings to notch his first win of the young campaign. He only allowed one hit, walked three and struck out seven.

The Kingsmen brought their bats

A two run home run in the first inning set the tone as CLU led 9-0 after three innings of play. They would cruise to their second win of 2024.

Final Score
Cal Lutheran (2-0) - 9
Puget Sound (2-2) - 2

Due to the slow pace of the game, at the two hour and ten minute mark we had only completed six innings, and the chilly, damp weather, we decided to leave the game a tad early.

CLU is located in Thousand Oaks, a suburb of Los Angeles after all, where fans are known for leaving games early.

It helped that only a ten minute drive from CLU was a new pizza palace that had great reviews that we had yet to try.

On Thousand Oaks Blvd, it was
REALLY good!

Laurie's Valentine's Day sentiment

I completely understand and support her lucid beliefs.

Another Taco Tuesday is
almost upon us

"Guilty as charged, your Honor"

HERESY!

The Italian Home Cooking and
Gelato Course both sound interesting

Our friend and expert glass blower, Joanne Sabolić, might enjoy the Glass Art class.

EuroBall seasons continue to heat up

The start of the 2024 Varese Italian DI
season is now just two weeks away

I communicated with Skorpions
Head Coach Nick Holt on Saturday

I agreed to serve the club for a fourth consecutive season as their Analytics Coach.

It is a non-paid position but keeps me off of the mean streets of Camarillo in the Spring.

An interesting game in Bologna, Italy
played for "The Love of the Game"

A game played between National teams from Italy and Mexico is not so unusual.

A charity American football game for Master players aged 45 and up is quite unusual. The older fellows just wanted to strap it up one more time for a good cause.

Team Mexico won, 32-12, but does it really matter?

By the way, the oldest player in the game was 66 years young.

There were again, no NIL inducements that I know of to play in this contest.

On to Spain . . .

Our old club, the Murcia Cobras, had a
home game against the Alicante Sharks
in a Serie B game

Sharks 30 - Cobras 13
NUTS!

Our other beloved Serie B club, the Guadalajara Stings defeated the Madrid Capitals 13-6.

The Stings are now 2-1 tied for
second place in Grupo Centro

The Cobras are 1-2, tied for fourth in the Grupo Este.

On to Spain's Serie A results . . .

The Badalona Dracs (4-0) beat
their Catalan Rivals,
the L'Hospitalet Pioners (1-3)

Mallorca's pre-game poster
showing a Voltor having trouble
holding on to the ball might be an omen

YIKES!

A bad omen indeed as Zaragoza (3-1) claimed the second spot in the Eastern Conference over the Voltors (2-2) to end the first half of the season.

The Barcelona Pagesos (0-4) had the much needed Eastern Conference bye this weekend.

The Las Rozas Demons (4-0) are the
clearcut Western Conference leaders
after routing the Gijón Mariners (1-3)

The 3-1 Osos Rivas were easy victors
against the Coslada Camioneros (2-2)

The Alcobendas Cavaliers (0-4) hopefully regrouped during this weekend's Western Conference bye.

The standings at the half way mark
of the 2024 Serie A season

Late Saturday night, I found a sad FaceBook post.

One of our players from the 2014
Newbury Park J.V. football team had passed

My memories of Ben have always been positive ones. He was a bright eyed and bushy tailed young man who constantly volunteered to do anything and everything that was needed to make the team better.

What more could a coach ask from a player?

Reading Is FUNdamental!

This is the 16th Bruno Chief of Police
novels that I have read

As always, Martin Walker's latest Bruno novel was a real corker!
