The Battle for the Camarillo Classic Trophy

Sun. & Mon., Oct. 27-28, 2024

The biggest event of the past two days was easily Monday's titanic, season ending coed middle school flag football game on the field at Las Colinas Intermediate School.

Monte Vista Middle School Toros
Season Record Unknown
at

Las Colinas Middle School Mustangs
7 Wins - 1 Loss

To the winner of this game would go the highly coveted Camarillo Classic Flag Football Championship Trophy.

The Mustangs were battling to
retain this trophy for the fourth
time in its five year history

There was no game in 2020 due to the pandemic.

While the Toros have never won this trophy, somehow the CAPE Comets did in 2022.

I'm not sure how this happened but I do know that it is still a sore spot for the Mustangs' coaches.

When these same two teams opened the 2024 season back on September 23rd at Monte Vista, the Mustangs prevailed, 27-0.

Sadly, Jacob had developed a heavy
cough, was running a high fever and
had stayed home from school today

He did rally enough in the afternoon to cheer his teammates on to victory but could not play.

Both Michael and I were at the game in our respective volunteer positions as Down Marker Holder and Team Photographer.

It is better to be lucky than to be good.

The Mustangs' two-point PAT was good as Las Colinas grabbed the early lead, 8-0.

The ensuing Kickoff saw . . .

female players

The Las Colinas Coaches

Forget the won-loss tally, these two men have consistently displayed a great, caring, nurturing and professional attitude while working with all of these athletes.

GREAT CAMPAIGN MUSTANGS!

The coaches asked if they could
take my photo holding the trophy

Only if Jacob could join me.

Speaking of Jacob . . .

He is posing with his new
Civil War Reenacting Uniform

He is now a pistol toting
Hospital Steward for the Union Army

This was a workhorse position that no longer exists in today's U.S. Army.

During the Civil War, a Hospital Steward was initially seen as a druggist/chemist. Ever present in field hospitals, they evolved into jacks-of-all-medical-trades assisting Surgeons during operations, tending to bandages and dressings, extracting teeth, applying cups and leeches and even cooking for the medical staff.

Congratulations to Jacob for his promotion!

Leeches . . .

If the two on the left are Skorpions, they must have come after my time in Varese.

If you are in Dubai this weekend,
have we got a flag football
tournament for you!

Undefeated Army at #21 this week

Navy and Washington are no where to be seen.

On Monday morning, Laurie and I took a two hour drive.

Our destination town

We had an appointment
at the Ontario Airport

After having filled out several forms on-line, we both still needed to have an in-person interview with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official in order to obtain our Global Entry passes that will make going through airport security a much easier task in the near future.

The interviews took about five minutes each and I'm happy to report that we both passed with flying colors.

Now, how to celebrate our shared accomplishment?

Lunch at Philippe The Original
in downtown Los Angeles

We ordered a French dip pork sandwich with bleu cheese for each of us, a slice of apple pie for me and a baked apple for Laurie and two lemonades.

THE ONLY WAY TO FLY!

Although, these picked pigs feet
were tempting

Somehow, I fought off the urge.

About one block between Philippe's and the start of touristy Olvera Street, one finds the site a Chevron gas station whose price per gallon of gasoline is always higher than in Camarillo.

By higher, I meant by a dollar or a tad more usually.

That same gas station today

Oh my goodness, $7.79 per gallon!

Do the people at the  L.A. Law TV show know about this gouging?

We waited until we got back to Camarillo to fill up our tank.

The Chevron station on Las Posas
was much more reasonable

By waiting to fill up when we got home in Camarillo about an hour after leaving Philippe's, the price was a whopping $3.42 per gallon cheaper.

We love living in Ventura County for numerous reasons, gas prices is becoming one of them apparently.

The World Series resumed on
Monday in New York City

Another incredible Dodgers
win in Game Three

Is a Sweep really going to happen?

We'll find out Tuesday night

Thanks to the hitting of first baseman Freddie Freeman and the continued strong performances by the entire pitching staff, a World Series Championship for Los Angeles certainly seems imminent at some point this week.

GO BLUE!
