Fri.-Sun., July 14-16, 2023
Lots happened in only three days and it started with a fun lunch in La Cañada-Flintridge with Michael D'Antuono, Paul Sabolic and his brother Al. Catching up is always fun.
On Friday, when I arrived in Pasadena,
I found my Mother, on the left, embroiled
in a Dominoes game with another patient
A nurse, in pink, was acting as the referee as my Mother racked up another victory before we resumed our tournament.
This extra practice round helped her throttle me yet again on this hot day in the San Gabriel Valley. Her margins of victory were 11 games to five and 151 points to my paltry 83.
After ten weeks of play, her Dominoes Tournament lead is now 499 to 476 in games and 7,945 to 7,605 in points. She is relentless when it comes to this most traditional of Cuban social games.
On Saturday, Jacob and I headed
over to Rio Mesa H.S. to watch several
teams in a 7-on-7 tournament
Rio Mesa vs. Buena was one of
six games going on at the same time
both on and off the Spartans' game field
Buena in blue on offense vs. Rio Mesa
The Rio Mesa DB in red dropped
what could have been a big interception
Jacob and I were off to the Camarillo
Air Museum after about an hour
watching the 7-on-7 games
I wonder how many times the two of us have visited this interesting museum over the years?
A WWII Japanese Zero
A British WWII Spitfire
I'm loving the five bladed propeller.
This four bladed propeller
looked sharp too
Reminds me of our son Andrew
Found on a WWII plane used
by the U.S. Coast Guard
A German WWII plane with an
incomplete swastika on the tail
Not sure what that was all about.
A pre-WWII U.S. Navy plane
Note the red dot in the middle of the white star on the wing which was the common marking on all U.S. military planes before Pearl Harbor.
WWII U.S. planes
Once we were at war with the Japanese, the red dot was removed from the white star for fear of possible misidentification for the red rising sun markings on the Japanese planes.

The museum's indoor museum was undergoing a massive rebuild so we were only allowed to see about 10% of the objects normally on display.
One new thing that we did see was photos about famed pioneering female aviators including . . .
. . . this amazing pilot
Barnes broke Amelia Earhart's air speed record in 1930, worked as a movie stunt pilot for years and founded the Motion Pictures Stunt Pilots Union.
What stood out for me was her quote under her photo.
I would have loved to have a beer
or 12 with her back in the day
Another EuroBall weekend . . .
Switzerland's DI Championship
Game included our 2012 club,
the Thun Tigers
It was the 8-3 Tigers first ever appearance in the Swiss Bowl.
The 10-1 Broncos were the heavy favorites having played in every Swiss Bowl since 2009, winning ten of them.
Here come the Tigers
Calanda easily swept the two regular season games with the Tigers by scores of 54-17 and 52-31.
There was a good crowd on hand
A Tiger DB a tad late covering
this Broncos WR
Calanda won their 11th Swiss Bowl
Championship comfortably
Meanwhile in Ireland . . .
The 9-0 Dublin Rebels were going after their tenth Shamrock Bowl win against the defending 2022 Shamrock Bowl Champion, 6-3, University College Dublin Sentinels.
The favored Rebels had swept the UCD Sentinels 40-26 and 25-24 during the regular season.
The Rebels won as wild Shamrock Bowl XXXV over the Sentinels, 40-34.
Only one surprise in the
European League of Football
in Week #7
It was Zurich, Switzerland's Helvetic Guards (2-5) shocking the Stuttgart Surge (5-1) 31-13 on Sunday.
The wins by the Rhein Fire (7-0), Vienna Vikings (6-0), Frankfurt Galaxy (5-1) and Tirol Raiders (5-2) were all closer than expected.
In Week #7, the Hungary's Fehérvár Enthroners (0-6) and Cologne Centurions (1-4) had byes.
The Rhein Fire and Frankfurt Galaxy
are in a two team race in the West
The Stuttgart Surge and Tirol Raiders
continue their battle atop the Central
The East is all about the
Vienna Vikings and the Berlin Thunder
The Wroclaw Panthers are still within striking distance of a Wild Card berth in the 2023 ELF Playoffs.
