The Camarillo Cosmos Track Meet With the Ventura Tigres

Weds.-Sun., April 12-16, 2023

An overall quiet few days were punctuated by the grandkids' Saturday track meet at Buena H.S. in Ventura against the home town Tigres Youth Track Club.

It would be a sunny but cold late
afternoon meet thanks to the brisk
wind blowing in from the nearby beach

We normally start these track meets at 8:00 a.m. but this one would begin at 3:00 p.m. The cold wind would become a huge factor for athletes and spectators alike as the Sun set into the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Mary warming-up with
a series of carioca bursts

Mary's best Long Jump today was
solid 7'1" good for 13th out of the 36
athletes in her Girls 8 and Under age group

On this jump, Mary's hair
reminds me of a moose

Jacob in the 1600 Meter Run

This was the last of the 11 events that he needed to compete in to qualify for his Camarillo Cosmos "Iron Dude" t-shirt.

1600 Meters is FOUR LAPS!

In this first attempt at this distance, Jacob finished 10th out of the 22 Boys in his 11-12 year old age group with a time of 6:29.07.

Jacob's favorite event is the Long Jump

Today he leapt 10'4 1/2" good for 11th out of 29 jumpers.

Mary in the 100 Meter Dash

Mary had a Personal Record in this sprint with a mark of 19.92. While she finished 11th out of 34 girls overall, she was the third fastest Cosmos girl today in her age group.

Jacob's 100 Meters start

He clocked a time of 16.43, finishing 18th out of 41 sprinters.

There were some fast athletes in
Jacob's 100 Meter race

After Jacob's 100 Meters, it was about 6:30 p.m. and the meet had been going on for three and a half hours.

This was a really slow pace considering that there were still more 100 Meters heats to run plus, goodness only knew how many, heats of the 800 Meters, 200 Meters and 4 x 400 Meter Relays.

Laurie does not react well to cold weather and it was definitely chilly. She looked miserable so we agreed to leave the meet even though we would miss Mary last two races and Jacob's final event as well.

Here is what we missed.

Mary ran a solid 800 Meters in a time of 3:37.73 placing her in second place out of ten competitors. She was also the fastest Cosmos runner at this distance on Saturday.

Mary's final event of the day was also her first 200 Meter Dash of the season. She came in a modest 10th out of 13 runners with a time of 50.49. More importantly, this was Mary's seventh and final event of the season needed to qualify for the Camarillo Cosmos 8 and Under Girls "Iron Chick" t-shirt.

As for the rest of Jacob's day, he ran a time of 34.69 in the 200 Meters. That ranked him 12th out of 22 sprinters.

Laurie and I are extremely proud of both Mary and Jacob for the effort that they have been giving on the track all season long and for their competitive drive in earning their "Iron Chick" and "Iron Dude" t-shirts!

Meanwhile, in Italian Football League action . . .

The Road to Toledo, Ohio started
up again after the Easter weekend break

The Varese Skorpions (1-2) were hosting
the Emilia Stainless Steel Warriors (0-3)

VICTORY!!!

The Skorpions had an outstanding day on Defense and put together a solid running game on Offense to win the day.

Italian Football League
Week #7 Schedule
April 22-23, 2023
Panthers (2-1) at Guelfi (5-0)
Dolphins (3-1) at Rhinos (3-1)
Ducks (1-3) at Mastini (0-4)
BYES: Frogs (2-2), Skorpions (2-2) and
Stainless Steel Warriors (0-4)

With six teams getting into the IFL playoffs, the Skorpions are still very much in contention for a post-season spot.

The defending IFL Champion Firenze Guelfi at 5-0 appear to be the class of the IFL in 2023 but the upcoming game against the traditional IFL power Parma Panthers (2-1) should be a stern test.

The winner of the game between the 3-1 Ancona Dolphins and the also 3-1 Milano Rhinos will have a leg up on the other contenders that are chasing both the Guelfi and one of those elusive playoff spots.

Finally . . .

I 100% AGREE!
