A Little of This, a Little of That and Another Camarillo Cosmos Track Meet

Mon.-Sun., April 17-23, 2023

As I write this post, it must be noted that today is . . .

. . . the Feast of St. George!

What a great saint indeed!

During the course of the week's travels to see my Mother who continues to battle, I stopped off for lunch at a highly recommended spot in Highland Park.

The Goldburger did NOT
disappoint in the least

Located at 5623 York Blvd in Los Angeles' Highland Park district, it is a simple burger joint with a small outside seating area.

Their signature Goldburger was my lunch time choice. It may not have been huge nor overly fancy, but it was the best tasting hamburger I've had in a long, long time.

Needless to say, I gave it a rating of . . .
"Two Thumbs WAY Up!"

A couple of fun Facebook posts from Poland . . .

This is a Happy Birthday wish
to Sieradz Warriors lineman
Jarosław Walczak

Piotr Walczak, who I'm guessing is Jarosław's kin, posted this photo of Jarosław in a donated Agoura H.S. Chargers jersey.

I wonder how he got that jersey?

Another post from Piotr featuring
a Father-Daughter moment at a
recent Sieradz Warriors practice

This Dad is also wearing an Agoura Chargers jersey but he has paired it with Westlake H.S. Warriors blue, orange and white pants.

Again, what is going on in Poland with this practice gear?

This is a photo of the first pitch from
this week's game in Detroit between the
Tigers and Cleveland Guardians

The crowd must number in the high 20s.

If it were ever just so simple to get into a Dodger game . . .

YAHOO!

If you recall, last week Michael and I drove down to Orange County to watch the Woodbridge H.S. Warriors baseball team, coached by family friend Ryan Brucker, play a game at Portola H.S. in Irvine.

With this resounding win over the Beckman H.S. Patriots, Ryan's Woodbridge team won their third straight Pacific Coast League Championship.

In 2021, the Warriors posted a 22-4 record on the way to their PCL title.

The Woodbridge ball club of 2022 was 22-8 in their championship season.

This year's Warriors team is currently 21-5 with two games left in the regular season plus a post-season run in the C.I.F.-Southern Section playoffs.

GREAT JOB COACH BRUCKER!

On Saturday, Mary and Jacob were running in their last regular regular season track meet.

Camarillo H.S. was the site of the
meet on a warm, sunny Saturday

The Cosmos were hosting two other
Ventura County Youth Track teams . . .

. . . the Gold Coast Spartans and . . .

. . . the Newbury Park Panthers

Now that both Mary and Jacob had earned their "Iron Chick/Iron Dude" status last week, they were both able to concentrate on just their favorite events in this meet.

Mary started the day
at the Long Jump pit

TAKEOFF!

Mid-air

Mary's best jump was 7'-7 1/4" to finish 11th out of the 32 U8 Girls jumping.

Unfortunately, while taking photos of Mary in the Long Jump, I missed Jacob's opening leg of the 4 x 100 meters. His team finished fourth out of the nine 11-12 Year old Boys fielding teams in the race. Their time of 1:03.27 was the fastest time of any of the 4 x 100 meters teams that Jacob has run with this Spring.

Now it was Jacob's turn
in the Long Jump pit

The Cosmos this track season are all wearing dark blue tank tops, so why is Jacob in a light blue top today?

As it turns out, that this was the top that Jacob's Dad Michael wore when he ran for the Cosmos about 35 years ago.

Retro uniforms are always cool.

Jacob had a GREAT day
in the Long Jump!

Gravity calling

Here he comes again!

His hair was flying as usual

Jacob improve his Personal Record (PR)
on all three of his jumps!

His best jump of the day was 12'-2" which placed him in 8th place in the Boys 11-12 division that had 32 jumpers in the meet.

The Camarillo Stingers Youth
Football Club wisely set up a
recruiting booth in the track meet

I was told that they needed coaches for the fast approaching 2023 season.

Mary was pensive at the
starting line of the 100 meters

They're Off!

Keep Pushing!

FINISH!!!

A Third in her Heat was solid

A total of 29 girls ran the 100 meters in her age group.

Mary's time of 20.03 was the 17th fastest in the U8 division.

Why is Jacob smirking before
his 100 meter dash?

Explosive starts are good

Sprinting

Pulling away

No wonder he was smirking

The 15.48 time was his PR in this event, his second PR of the day.

After all of the Boys 11-12 heats of the 100 meters, Jacob's time ranked 15th out of the 37 sprinters entered at this shortest of the day's distances.

Mary enjoys running the 800 meters,
she is wearing 2 on her top and shorts

Go Mary GO!

The 800 Meters race was a combined
competition with both 8U Boys and Girls

Mary got her first PR of the day in
the 800 meters with a time of 3:31.25

There were seven U8 Girls in this race, Mary finished in fourth place.

I believe that Jacob's favorite event
is the 200 meters

Keep up the effort!

Third in his heat

In the 200 meters, there were 15 sprinters. Jacob finished tenth overall.

Mary's last event of the day
was the 200 meters

She ended her meet happily with her second PR of the day covering the half lap distance in 47:63.

After all of the heats of this race were contested, Mary finished in ninth place out of the 13 Girls U8 sprinters.

As his his normal practice, Jacob
stays until the end of the meet
to run in the 4 x 400 meter Relay

The meet was now in its SIXTH hour and it was HOT. Thus they combined the Boys and Girls 4 x 400 meter races to save some time.

Only two Boys 11-12 relay teams,
both from the Cosmos, were entered

Jacob ran the first leg of the race as his team came in second with a time of 6:11.66.

Next Saturday, the Cosmos will host
the VCYTC East JV Championship Meet

This meet will feature athletes from the Camarillo Cosmos, Moorpark Striders, Newbury Park Panthers and Thousand Oaks Flyers Youth Track Clubs.

Overall, Jacob and Mary have had a great time running for the Cosmos and we have enjoyed watching their exploits this Spring.

What to do after a long day at the track . . .

Why a late lunch at El Tecolote,
Camarillo's
historic Mexican dining spot, of course!

Jacob, taking his life in his own
hands, approaching me stealthily
while I eat a delicious beef taco

On to our weekly EuroBall update . . .

It was a topsy-turvy week
in the IFL

That was great news for our beloved Varese Skorpions who were idle this week. With four games left on the Skorpions schedule, the path to the playoffs looks much brighter for the Varese squad as they are now only one down in the loss column to the top three clubs, the Guelfi, Panthers and Dolphins after this weekends slate of games.

The Skorpions remaining schedule is at the Lazio Ducks (2-3), at the Legnano Frogs (2-2), vs. the Ancona Dolphins (4-1) and vs. the Milano Rhinos (3-2). The top six clubs will be part of the 2023 IFL's playoffs.

Reading Is FUNdamental!

WWII, Italian Fascists, German Gestapo,
Italian Resistance Fighters

Make one woman a Resistance fighter in Florence and the other an Italian movie star in Rome and you have all the makings of an interesting historical novel based on several real people and events near the end of the Allies Italian campaign.

Overall, I must say that it was a good week yet again.
