A REALLY Good Weekend of American Football

Fri.-Sun., January 14-16, 2022

Football, football, football . . .

It was a good weekend if you love the great game of American football, and I do!

Corona, California
Home of the Santiago H.S. Sharks

At 6:00 a.m., Saturday morning Ryan Bolland, the Buena H.S. Head Football Coach, picked me up for the 106 mile drive to Santiago H.S. and the 64th Annual Southern California Football Coaches Association Clinic.

This clinic is the longest running
football clinic in the western 27 states

We left Camarillo in darkness as Ryan needed to be at Santiago H.S. in time for the 8:00 a.m. All-C.I.F. Division 8 Selection meeting.

As you may recall, Ryan's Buena team had a magical 2021 season that included a Pacific View League Championship, a 10-4 record and a trip to the C.I.F. Division 8 Championship Game.

We got there with time to spare and I got a chance to sit in on the selection meeting as a silent observer.

I won't release any names but the Bulldogs were well represented in garnering seven spots on the 2021 All-C.I.F. Southern Section Division 8 Team.

Now it was time to register for the clinic and hopefully see a few coaches from back in the day.

I walked into the school's auditorium and, lo and behold, who was the first person I saw . . .

. . . none other than the legendary
Coach Lin "Bearcat" Parker!

The Bearcat was a long time coach at a few high schools in the Antelope Valley area. He was also, as his sweatshirt hints, the Head Coach of the mighty Cal Tech Beavers back in the day.

Beloved by all who know him, it was a treat catching up with the Bearcat at the clinic.

On to the clinic . . .

Terrance Gant, LB Coach
Santiago H.S.
"Defending 10/11 Personnel and
2x2 Sets With Cover 7"

Interesting topic with some solid points.

Sam Adams, Head Coach
Oxford H.S., Alabama
"Systems that Win - An Intentional
Culture and Offensive Organization"

His ideas on Culture Building were good ones that coaches need to consider strongly when taking over a new job.

It was time for the lunch break and the SCFCA Board provided us with a delicious, all you can eat street taco truck to meet our needs.

My needs were for three pork and three chicken tacos. The tacos were made to perfection and their green and red sauces were both tasty and spicy.

With Bearcat and George Pascoe
at lunch

I first met George when we were both part of a week-long football clinic in Maui back in the Summer of 1981.

I was the Head Coach at Westlake H.S. back in those days and George was a about to start his first season as Head Coach of the Huntington Beach H.S. Oilers.

During our week in paradise, we started to talk about offense and he showed great interest in the Delaware Wing-T Offense that we had ben running for the previous there seasons.

George bought into what we were doing and installed the Delaware Wing T with the Oilers as soon as he returned to the mainland.

That season featured a lot of phone calls by George in attempts to fine tune what his team was doing and give him my thoughts on how to attack various team's defenses.

The net result for Huntington Beach H.S.?

The 1981 Championship of what was back then one of the toughest leagues in all of California, Orange County's Sunset League.

It was great to see George again after all these years. He currently is a coach at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.

Sam Adams, Head Coach
Oxford H.S., Alabama
"Maximizing the Quick Game:
Pass/Screen Combos and Pass/Boot Combos"

Coach Adams second topic of the day, his Quick Game is problematic for any Defensive Coordinator as he confirmed with the highlight videos that he shared with us.

Santiago Sharks logos were
all over the Santiago H.S. campus

Richard Fong, Assistant Head Coach
Simi Valley H.S.
"Breaking Down Opponent Video
and Weekly Game Preparation"
Coach Fong gave a meticulous talk where I got some great ideas on how to improve your practices by getting much more efficient play out of your scout teams.

Overall, it was a solid clinic but I was greatly disappointed by the sparse turnout. Maybe it was the Omicron variant, the weather, the distance or the growth on on-line coaching resources.

I just hope, for the continued growth of the game, that it is not apathy on the part of the current generation of SoCal high school football coaches.

This was waiting for me when
I got home from the clinic

A trip to Davis, a fun little college town in NorCal, would be fun.

On to the Wonderful World of EuroBall . . .

The Skorpions are ALWAYS
trying to improve their Senior Team
roster for the upcoming 2022 season

Speaking of the Skorpions, the U18 team is at it again.

The Italian U18 season was
in its final two weeks

On Sunday, it was time for the two Semi-Final Playoff contests.

The HP team (6-0) from Parma was hosting the Guelfi Firenze (7-0) in one game.

The Skorpions Varese (6-0) were at home against the Bergamo Lions (5-2).

The HP team (7-0) dominated
the Guelfi Firenze (7-1)

The Skorpions (7-0) had little trouble
dispatching the Lions (5-3)

The HP team and the Skorpions will meet for the U18 Championship next Saturday in Florence.

Go Skorpions GO!

The Spanish Serie A Season
started this weekend

There were three games on Saturday.

Madrid's Osos Rivas beat
the Gijón Mariners

I helped coach the Osos Offensive Line with their fundamentals during two months of their pre-season practices back in the Fall of 2016.

Our old club, the Murcia Cobras
won a close one over the
Las Rozas Black Demons

I was the Cobras Head Coach in 2015.

Spain's best team over the past several
seasons hammered the 2021 Serie B
Champions in the Pioners return to Serie A

Sunday was GAME DAY indeed
for the Mallorca Voltors

I'll be the Voltors Analytics Coach this season.

It was close but the home team
Hurricanes pulled out a win

DAMN!

Apparently there were some NFL Playoff games this weekend but, really, who cares?

This is the only NFL Playoff
game that matters and it is
a Monday night affair

It should be memorable!

The Rams enter the game with a 12-5 record, good for first place in the NFC West. The Cardinals are 11-6 which earned the second spot in the NFC West.

In Week #4, the Cardinals beat the Rams in Los Angeles, 37-20.

In Week #14, the Rams beat the Cardinals in Arizona, 30-23.

I'm still trying to find an economical method of shipping some of our used football jerseys and pants to . . .

. . . Chile's national flag kind of
reminds me of the Texas state flag

The coach in Chile that I'm trying to help, Sergio Cornejo, sent me a photo of the Chilean National Team's helmet style.

I like it!

Then there were these two unsettling bits of news . . .

Our beloved Washington Huskies
are a Tier 6 team in this chart

The unsettling thing is that, based on the 2021 season, I have to begrudgingly agree with this assessment.

Not surprisingly, there were six PAC-12 teams relegated to the desperation that is Tier 6.,

And finally . . .

. . . wrong, this is just
WRONG!!!
