I got a call from my old high school chum, Terry Terrazone, that our alma mater had some old game jerseys that they no longer wanted and were willing to donate to our EuroBall equipment project.
With this in mind, I headed down to La Cañada-Flintridge to the campus of St. Francis H.S., home of the Golden Knights.
My one hour drive to St. Francis H.S. would take me through the City of Sylmar where Jacob's Pop Warner team plays this coming Saturday night at El Cariso Community Regional Park.
Since I was early for my appointed meeting with Terry to pick up the gear, I opted to check out Saturday's game site.
First, I found the park to be HUGE with tennis courts, a swimming pool, basketball courts, softball fields and baseball fields not to mention lots of verdant expanses of grass and shade trees to enjoy on a warm day.
After a little exploring and a few well placed questions, I finally found the football field tucked away behind the left field fence of the park's excellent baseball stadium.
The football field is immaculate
I call it a field, not a stadium
The bleachers on both sides of the field are covered but only four rows tall. The highest of the four rows only looks to be about at hip high at best. Placed behind the area where the players and coaches roam the sideline, they do not offer good sight lines.
Bring your lawn chairs.
I was still early, so I stopped in Laurie's old stomping grounds, beautiful downtown Montrose.
Easy to do with this quaint shopping street
Maybe Laurie and Toby should
stop by on Saturday
The delicious tri-tip, scrambled eggs chilaquiles verde with beans and avocado that I had for lunch were EXCELLENT!
I say this first because they were delicious to the taste and the spiciness stayed with my churning stomach for hours.
What more can you ask for out from good Mexican food?
Finally, I arrived at St. Francis
The alma mater on the hill still looks great
Lots of good memories were made at this all boys school from initial enrollment in September of 1961 to graduation in June of 1965.
Now as to those donated jerseys, I expected about 50 to 80 game jerseys in total.
I came home with approximately
120 white game jerseys and . . .
. . . about another 120 brown game jerseys!
They are all in great shape but with a quite noticeable aroma of long time storage mustiness.
Laurie, being the absolute trooper that she is, immediately started loading them into our washing machine at a rate of ten jerseys to a load in order to make them more fragrant to ship.
As she did this, I took her car that I used today straight to the car wash to clean out some dirt and lint that the jerseys had left behind plus being sure to get her favorite fragrance, cherry, liberally sprayed into her car's cargo area.
So far, Laurie has discovered four different brown jersey styles in
her first five loads
THANK YOU, LAURIE!
She is truly the perfect coach's wife.
