It was a BEAUTIFUL day for American football, especially for the coed flag football version.
Thus we ventured to nearby Somis for a middle school game involving our grandson Jacob and his Mustang mates.
Las Colinas Mustangs
3 Wins - 1 Loss
at
Mesa Union Tigers
Season Record Unknown
Mesa Union, established in 1939, has earned a high academic reputation over its 85 years of existence producing esteemed scholars like Brian and Tom FitzGerald.
By the initial looks of it, the Tigers have not spent a single farthing on field maintenance over its glorious existence.
See what I mean?
Besides the obvious lack of verdant growth, this field had lots of gopher holes and deep water runoff ruts.
Thank goodness that no one suffered any leg injuries on this rather subpar field.
But I digress, we had a game to play.
Jacob, #24 on the right, on
the opening kickoff
There is lots of running by everyone
in a flag football game
A Mustang reaching for
that elusive Tiger's flag
Interception Mustangs!
Las Colinas' patented Sweep play
The Mustangs short passing game
was effective as usual
The Mustangs' starting QB was not at the game today.
Today's QB on a Keeper
Possessing a pair of swivel hips
is a HUGE asset in flag football
TOUCHDOWN MUSTANGS!
So close to a QB Sack but no
Here come the Mustangs again!
A stylish pirouette to taunt the would
be Tiger defender on the way to
another Las Colinas TD
Pressuring a QB is always
a good move on Defense
End of the First Quarter
Las Colinas - 16
Mesa Union - 0
The DE pass rush by the Mustangs
was unrelenting
A key block for sure but,
about that ball carrying technique
Speed is a good commodity
I think that our Mustang's
flag may have been pulled
Leaping for the Goal Line but
his flag was pulled short of a TD
Scrum on the Goal Line
The Tigers stopped the Mustangs on downs at the one yard line but gave up a Safety on the subsequent snap.
There she goes again!
She has proven to be quite elusive
in all of the games this season
Nice high point Mustang's catch
Flag pull or full on tackle?
Excellent job of setting up
and cutting off of this block
Swarming Tigers' Defense but
still no flag pull
A Mesa Union Kickoff Return
Halftime Score
Las Colinas - 25
Mesa Union - 0
As has always been our coaching staff's philosophy during these last two seasons of Las Colinas coed flag football, the Second Half would see the Mustangs bench cleared in an effort to get everyone significant playing time and not embarrass our opponents by running up the score.
Modeling good sportsmanship is a wonderful thing for which our coaches need to be lauded.
A Mustang and a Tiger flying around
A new QB for the Mustangs
slinging the ball downfield
The same QB on a Keeper with
lots of brown dirt in front of him
Cross that line for a
Mustangs First Down!
Looking downfield before . . .
. . . tucking the ball away
Our two referees shared the perfect
attitude to work with young people
just learning about the game of football
The QB looks and . . .
. . . throws a TD pass to grandson Jacob!
Even though he caught the ball in
the End Zone, Jacob followed his
training by turning and running
upfield after his catch
I liked that deep seated reaction and his lack of any celebratory post TD shenanigans.
The Tigers were down but still
competing on every down
End of the Third quarter
Las Colinas - 32
Mesa Union - 0
New Defensive Ends,
same QB pressure
Could not flush the Tigers QB out
of the pocket on this next play
Who wants it more?
The Mustangs did!
Returning this slight-of-hand
Las Colinas interception
Another pass,
another Tigers-Mustangs battle
She's OPEN!
Pressure in the Tiger QB's face again
Jacob defending on the last
play of the game
He was rightfully called, under flag football rules, for an Unnecessary Roughness penalty. Contact is frowned upon in flag football.
Given the score, Mesa Union declined the penalty and the game came to a close.
If it was a Pop Warner game, Jacob would have received high praise for breaking up this pass.
Final Score
Las Colinas (4-1) - 32
Mesa Union (?-?) - 0
A few other notes from today . . .
Only 11 College Elevens are
still undefeated
Still great seeing Army and Navy in the elite group sharing the rarified air of perfection.
In case you are not familiar with the logos, they are from left to right, top to bottom: Army, Navy, Miami of Florida, Texas, Oregon, Indiana, Liberty, Penn State, Brigham Young, Pittsburgh and Iowa State.
Another IFAF European Tournament
game scheduled for this coming Saturday
Team Serbia (0-0) hosts Team Hungary (0-1) in a Second Round tournament contest to be played in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
Now, on to the world of the two Major League Baseball League Championship Series . . .
The New York Mets prevailed today
over our Los Angeles Dodgers
The best-of-seven National League Championship Series is now tied at one game apiece.
The New York Yankees beat the
Cleveland Guardians
The Yankees leads the best-of-seven ALCS, one game to none.
More baseball trivia to titillate
Paul Sabolić and Michael D'Antuono
What, Me Worry?
EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE,
if you ask me
Another wonderful day
in Camarillo, California!
