A Sunday Full of American Football, Both Foreign AND Domestic!

Sunday, August 27, 2023

It was all about American football for me all day today.

Most of my Sunday was spent breaking down the videos of last Friday night's Dymally H.S. (2-0) Challengers at Buena H.S. (0-2) Bulldogs game. These two played a wild, high scoring game that ended in Dymally's favor 47-41.

I perform this labor of love for our good friend and Bulldogs' Head Coach Ryan Bolland.

I coached Ryan at Buena H.S. in 2002 and 2003 where he was a Linebacker/Strong Safety. A few years later, after he graduated from Notre Dame University,  he helped me coach Sweden's Hässleholm Hurricanes in 2010 serving as our Offensive Coordinator.

My job for Ryan was to analyze all three phases (Special Teams, Defense and Offense) of the Buena squad's play.

Despite their 0-2 record to date, the Bulldogs showed signs of improvement in several areas against Dymally as compared to their effort in the season opener, a 27-13 loss to the Oak Park H.S. Eagles.

THANK GOODNESS!

There was only a light sprinkling of games this weekend highlighted by the much anticipated Navy-Notre Dame game contested in Dublin, Ireland.

Unfortunately, it was a Notre Dame blowout, 42-3.

The Japanese college season
starts next Saturday

Besides the 2023 games listed on this Kwansei Gakuin University poster, the Fighters will also play a game against the Southern Oregon University Raiders on May 4, 2024.

I love some of the nicknames of the Fighters' opponents listed on this poster, especially Seahorses, Red Gang, Gangsters and Kaisers.

The regular season is winding
down in Finland tough Maple League

There were two games played over the weekend in IFAF's Women's 2023-2024 European Championship Tournament.

This sounded like a good one to me

Team Germany in White

defense!
Defense!!
DEFENSE!!!

Team Spain for the WIN!

Nordic Border War

Team Sweden in the White

Another low scoring affair

A Team Finland win by a shutout was impressive.

Finally, on to the European League of Football . . .

No big surprises in Week 13

Then again the 11-0 Vienna Vikings narrow 21-20 win over the 3-8 Fehérvár Enthroners was a tad of a head shaker.

The 11-0 Rhein Fire travel to
take on the 10-1 Frankfurt Galaxy
this coming Sunday

What a game to end the regular season.

The Fire handed the Galaxy their only loss of the season during a Week 1 game played in Düsseldorf, Germany on June 4th.

While both teams have already clinched playoff berths, the outcome of this game will determine the all important playoff seedings and a possible first round bye..

Stuttgart (9-2) is in the playoffs

The Tirol Raiders (7-4) still have a chance for post-season play.

The Raiders will need to win their final game on Saturday in Hamburg against the 4-7 Sea Devils and still get some help.

The Munich Ravens (6-5) still have a distant mathematical chance to get a post-season berth.

The defending ELF Champion
Vienna Vikings (11-0) are a
playoff lock

Both 7-4 Berlin Thunder and 7-4 Wroclaw Panthers are battling the Central Conferences 7-4 Tirol Raiders for the final two playoff spots.

The ELF 2023 Playoffs picture
with one more week to play
in the regular season

Via the ELF's tie breaking rules, the seeds for the moment would be:
#1 Rhein Fire Western Conference #1
#2 Vienna Vikings Eastern Conference #1
#3 Stuttgart Surge Central Conference #1

#4 Frankfurt Galaxy Western Conference #2
#5 Berlin Thunder Eastern Conference #2
#6 Wroclaw Panthers Eastern Conference #3

But . . .

The Raiders and . . .

. . . the Ravens still have an outside
shot at making the playoffs

It won't be easy for either of them.

As for that final week of the 2023 ELF season . . .

European League of Football Week 14
Saturday, September 2, 2023
Vienna Vikings (11-0) at Prague Lions (1-10)
Tirol Raiders (7-4) at Hamburg Sea Devils (4-7)

Sunday, September 3, 2023
Rhein Fire (11-0) at Frankfurt Galaxy (10-1)
Barcelona Dragons (2-9) at Munich Ravens (6-5)

Hamburg Sea Devils (4-7) at Berlin Thunder (7-4)
Cologne Centurions (4-7) at Paris Musketeers (5-6)

Helvetic Guards (3-8) at Stuttgart Surge (9-2)
Wroclaw Panthers (7-4) at Fehérvár Enthroners (3-8)

A good Sunday to be sure.

As for this week,
Go Stingers!
Beat the Rams Gold!

The Opening Game of Jacob's 2023 Pop Warner Season

Saturday, August 26, 2023

Finally, after five weeks of practice, the start of the 2023 Pop Warner season was upon us!

Our Grandson Jacob a member of
the Stingers' Sophomore Team

This would be Jacob's second season playing American tackle football for Camarillo's chapter of the Gold Coast Youth Football League.

The Stingers would be on their home field at Camarillo H.S. on what was an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day for American football!

The Kickoff was slated for 4:00 p.m.

The Stingers opponent today would be the Simi Valley Bulldogs Orange team. Simi Valley had enough players at this 10-11-12 year old age group to form two Sophomore teams. The Bulldogs Black team is considered to the better of the two Simi Valley Sophomore clubs.

Camarillo only has one 25 player team at the Sophomore level.

pre-game warm-ups

The Stingers returned the
opening kickoff  TO THE HOUSE!

What a GREAT way to start the season, 6-0 Stingers!

It should be noted that, at this level, there are no regulations restricting what numbers linemen, backs and receivers can wear.

Jacob, #99, with a solid block on the edge defender.

The Stingers led 30-0 midway through the Third Quarter which triggered the Pop Warner Mercy Rule. The rest of the game was played with a running clock.

30-6 was the Final Score in
favor of the Stingers

Since I have long felt that shutouts are Fascist, I was happy to see the Bulldogs score in the Fourth Quarter.

Leaving the field with a modicum of dignity is important for all of these players, win or lose.

Up next for the Stingers is another home game next Saturday, September 2nd, at 2:00 p.m. against the Calabasas Rams Gold team.

The Stingers post-game celebration

Michael and Jacob were both
happy after the game

Michael is the Stingers Defensive Coordinator.

Justin Schmidt did a fine job
as the Head Referee today

Justin played in the Offensive Line for us at Rio Mesa H.S. in the early 1990s.

Michael and Justin were teammates
and classmates at Rio Mesa H.S.

Abe Sanchez with his son and daughter
joining us for a post-game photo

Abe is one of the Simi Valley coaches. His son was the Bulldogs starting Center and his daughter is a Simi Valley cheerleader.

In the late 1980s, Abe was an Offensive Lineman for us at Westlake H.S.

Seeing Justin and Abe today confirmed it for me yet again, it's such a small world.

American football AND
the Tour de France?

It was truly a good day to be alive.
