Disappointing News and a Homecoming Game

Thursday, October 10, 2024

I was with Laurie sharing a pre-game dinner at Oxnard's Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana when my phone pinged with a message from Brian Guzman.

Brian is the Head Football Coach
of the Brasil Onças

As you may recall, I am the Special Teams Coach for the Brasil Onças, a post that I am honored to hold. I have been so excited about rejoining a great group of coaches and players at our upcoming tournament in December.

The Onças are Brazil's National Team that has been scheduled to play in the International Federation of American Football's (IFAF) South American Qualifying Tournament where victory would lead to a bid in IFAF's World Championship Tournament next Summer in Germany.

This particular South American Qualifying Tournament has been scheduled since last May to be played in São Paulo, Brazil on December 9-16, 2024.

I say "particular" because it has been postponed on two other occasions by IFAF for various reasons over the last two years.

Besides the Onças, National Teams from Argentina, Chile and Panama were going to São Paulo to vie for the one slot in IFAF's big tournament next Summer.

As has become the norm with all things IFAF tournament related, Brian had bad news.

Argentina, Chile and Panama were supposed to begin payment of their IFAF tournament fees this week and all three backed out and asked to reschedule for sometime in 2025. Thus IFAF cancelled the South American Tournament.

Brazil in turn asked IFAF to confirm the dates for the IFAF World Championship Tournament. No surprise here as IFAF says that they do not have those dates confirmed yet.

Bottom line is many disappointed players and coaches including the squad's Special Teams' Coach.

After absorbing this sad news and having had yet another wonderful dining experience, Laurie and I were off to a Homecoming football game.
