It was a pleasant day punctuated by not one but two football games -- one flag and one tackle.
Let's start with Jacob's non-league middle school coed flag football face-off today.
Ventura's De Anza Navigators
Record Unknown
at
Camarillo's Las Colinas Mustangs
6 Wins - 1 Loss
The Mustangs were primed for
another big effort today
It must be noted that the constant yelling, screaming and harsh questioning between plays by the De Anza coach and his players was, to say the least, disturbing and embarrassing.
There was one funny exchange I must admit.
When the Navigators' coach wanted to express his displeasure with one of his player's effort on the previous play, he bellowed from the sideline, "YOU'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF SECOND GEAR!"
The De Anza Free Safety yelled back, "COACH, STOP YELLING, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! WE DON'T KNOW WHAT SECOND GEAR IS?"
While this Generation Gap moment was a bit funny, the vast majority of the exchanges just screamed of a lack of respect between this coach and his players and vice versa.
It was not good.
The game itself was a good one.
Jacob, #24 on the left, covering
the opening Kickoff
The Mustangs' #7 deflected this
pass harmlessly to the turf
Who doesn't love to watch a good
player with flowing, flaming red locks?
Pincer move by the Las Colinas Defense
Jacob needs to somehow pull
this large Navigator's flag
Breaking up a De Anza pass
is a good thing
GET THAT FLAG!
Mustangs' Pursuit to the rescue
Las Colinas inside running game
is almost always an annoying threat
Double teaming De Anza's HUGE #20
It was a MUST!
The Mustangs were deep in their
own territory as the First Quarter
came to a conclusion
End of the First Quarter
Las Colinas - 0
De Anza - 0
The first play of the Second Quarter was a pivotal point of the First Half.
The Mustangs were punting from about their own ten yard line.
The rules of coed flag football for punts are fairly simple.
First, the Offense must declare whether they are punting or going for it on Fourth Down.
Then if it is a punt, the Defense must have a minimum of four of their eight players on the line of scrimmage who must remain stationary until the ball is punted.
The Punter is handed the ball by the Center, then drops back anywhere they want to behind the line of scrimmage and punts the ball.
No one on the punting team or the defenders on the line of scrimmage are allowed to move until the ball is punted.
Sounds simple correct?
Well, not when your punt is a low
line drive that hits your non-moving
back in the rear end
Under the rules, any live ball is dead at the spot when it hits the ground.
First and Goal De Anza at the
four yard line
YOU GO GIRL!
After two plays, De Anza drew first blood.
Stopping the Two-Point PAT
attempt by the Navigators
Still, De Anza led 6-0.
Going DEEP!
It was a "too tall to call," incomplete pass.
I would probably need to explain this idiom to a Mustang if I had yelled it out.
Las Colinas Scat Back scatting!
The Mustangs get outside easily
every game!
This short pass completion
drew a crowd of Navigators
Unfazed by the deficit, the Mustangs methodically matriculated the ball down the field.
Finally, this pass was . . .
. . . caught in the shadows for a TD!
The Las Colinas one-point PAT attempt was good and now the Mustangs held a slight lead, 7-6.
The Mustangs' Defense stymied
the final De Anza drive of the Half
Halftime Score
Las Colinas - 7
De Anza - 6
The Navigators moved the ball
well to start the third stanza . . .
. . . and so did the Mustangs!
She's open . . .
. . . the potential Mustangs
BIG play . . .
. . . again just a tad too long DRAT!
What, me worry?
No way, just keep working the plan.
Back to the short passes
There's that red haired kid again
The next pass play got a bit
physical but with no intended malice
in my opinion
It still did not feel good
to hit the turf, I'm pretty sure
Put a move once . . .
. . . then twice . . .
. . . on your way to PAY DIRT!
Las Colinas successfully went for two on the PAT to extend their lead to 15-6.
GREAT Pass Rush Pressure!
"I'm Batman!"
The Mustangs' Defense played
extremely well in this quarter
End of the Third Quarter
Las Colinas - 15
De Anza - 6
This high De Anza snap helped
RALLY MUSTANGS!
Here he comes again!
He was easily the best Navigator on the field today.
BOMBS AWAY . . .
. . . but the Mustangs came up
with a key interception!
QB Sweep working yet again!
Battling for the Ball
Running down the
Sideline Tightrope
Forcing the Navigators to respect
the Inside Run near the Goal Line
Rolling out and . . .
. . . finding an open Mustang
in the End Zone for SIX!
I love this Navigator's reaction
Although I'm not sure if it was inspired by the Las Colinas TD or having to endure another barrage of verbal abuse by his coach.
De Anza stopped the Mustangs' one-point PAT attempt but Las Colinas now had a commanding lead at 21-6 with not much time left in the game.
Good Kickoff coverage by Las Colinas
She got the flags pulled easily
Unorthodox but a hard block by
this De Anza lineman nonetheless
This pass fell incomplete but . . .
. . . this one did not as he was able
to work his way through the
secondary for a Navigators' TD
It was a case of too little, too late as even with a successful two-point PAT the Mustangs still held a 21-14 advantage with ten seconds left in the game.
Final Score
Las Colinas Mustangs (7-1) - 21
De Anza Navigators (?-?) - 14
The Mustangs' final game of the season will be at home next Monday at 4:00 p.m. against their arch-rival crosstown foes, the Monte Vista Toros.
The Mustangs beat the Toros, 27-0, on the road in the opening game of the season.
WAY TO BATTLE MUSTANGS!
I opted to dive over to watch part of an interesting, to me, high school JV game in Oxnard starting at 6:00 p.m.
Nordhoff H.S. is one of Ventura County's
oldest high schools, established in 1909
3 Wins - 4 Losses
at
The Del Sol H.S. Jaguars, Ventura
County's newest high school which
opened its doors in 2023
3 Wins - 4 Losses
When they opened last year, Del Sol only had Freshmen on a campus that was to a large degree under construction. Truth be told, it still is.
This year, the campus houses a Freshmen and a Sophomore class. Because of this, the Jaguars are playing a JV schedule against any JV or Soph/Frosh opponents with an opening in their schedules.
These two teams met on August 22nd in Ojai where the Jaguars brought home a 30-14 victory.
Tonight's game was special on two fronts, A. It was Del Sol's last game of the season and B. It was the the Jaguars' first home night game thanks to the Oxnard Union High School District renting two powerful portable light polls to illuminate the action.
The Jaguars' Cheerleaders were
full of school spirit
The scene at dusk with the Topatopa
Mountains in the background
was BEAUTIFUL!
The natural grass field was pristine!
It is the only grass field in the seven high school Oxnard Union High School District.
These portable home stands will
eventually be used at the school's
baseball and softball fields
Permanent stadium bleachers are planned to be in place no later than the school's first season with all four classes of Jaguars in attendance.
The Jaguars scored first to lead 8-0
Del Sol coming right at us!
We had a glorious Sunset in the
First Quarter
Now here is something that
you don't see much anymore,
a Dirt Track!
An all-weather track is planned to be installed in the near future, too.
Lots of running made the game
move along as the sun continued
to dip into the Pacific Ocean
Nice Pancake Block on the left
The Sunset just kept getting better . . .
. . . as did the Jaguars' Offense
in the Second Quarter
TD DEL SOL!
Nothing like a team celebrating
shared achievement in a classy way
Final Score
Del Sol Jaguars (4-4) - 39
Nordhoff Rangers (3-5) - 8
It was an enjoyable and positive experience for all of the Del Sol H.S. community, I'm glad that I attended the festivities.
The Los Angeles Rams/Wolverines
had a home game tonight
A surprising win for the Rams (3-4)
over the Minnesota Vikings (5-2)
A milestone for the Rams Head Coach
Moving on to EuroBall news in Spain
I mentioned that we had a high school donate about 250 game jerseys this week to our EuroBall program building movement.
We found out that our new team
in Spain, the Gijón Mariners, will be
taking some of these brown and . . .
. . . white jerseys off of our hands to
use as practice jerseys
Some but not all. Do we have any other takers out there?
Team Denmark travel to Milan to
play Team Italy on Saturday in a
European IFAF World Championship
Qualifying Tournament game
The Varese Skorpions will have
a new Head Coach in 2025
The Skorpions 2023 QB returns as
the club's Offensive Coordinator
Go Skorpions GO!
Finally, some giggles from the net . . .
I really am
I have agreed with this concept
in the past and still do today
