Let's Finish Up the Weekend's Loose Ends

Sunday, October 13, 2024

There was one rather important bit of news over the weekend, our team in Spain, the Gijón Mariners, have signed an import QB for the 2025 campaign.

Meet new Mariners QB Spencer Moore

He will join us in Northern Spain after having played in Europe for the first time this past Summer in Germany.

In college, Spencer played for Ohio State's club football team with great success.

He was named the 2023 National Club Football Association's (NCFA) Offensive Most Valuable Player. He threw an NCFA record 32 TD passes in 2023 while becoming the first player in NCFA history to throw for over 2,000 yards in a season with a total of 2,209 yards. That was an average of 245.4 passing yards per game.

During his four year career at Ohio State, he accounted for 48 TDs (39 Passing, five Rushing and four receiving) and over 3,000 yards of Total Offense.

He was part of four Great Lakes Eastern Conference title teams and two NCFA National Championship teams while playing for the Buckeyes.

After speaking with Spencer during the recruiting process, I got a strong feeling that we found the right person to lead us in Spain.

Welcome Aboard Spencer,
FEAR THE ANCHOR!

Saturday was a big college football day as usual.

Washington Huskies (3-2, 2-1 BIG-10)
at
Iowa Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-1 BIG-10)

But not a big day for our Dawgs

A total ass whipping by the Hawkeyes, especially in the Second Half.

The Huskies, now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in BIG-10 play, will have time to lick their wounds during a bye week before taking on the surprising Indiana Hoosiers (6-0, 3-0 BIG-10) in Bloomington on October 26th.

Iowa (4-2, 2-1 BIG-10) travels to East Lansing next Saturday to do battle with the Michigan State Spartans (3-3, 1-2 BIG-10).

How did our two favorite military academies fare on Saturday?

Army Black Knights (6-0, 5-0 AAC) - 44
UAB Blazers (1-5, 0-3 AAC) - 10

Army is really, really good this year!

#60 - Connor Finucane
6'4" - 315 lbs. - Senior - OL
Baton Rouge, Louisiana

He will HIT YOU!

So will the Army's Leader's Straight Arm
#13 - Bryson Daily
6'0" - 221 lbs. - Senior - QB
Abernathy, Texas

What a difference Coach Jeff Monken
and his staff have made at West Point!

Indeed this sixth win of the season
makes Army bowl eligible

Although I believe that there are far bigger things still in the Black Knights' sights the rest of this season.

Next up for Army is a home game against the East Carolina Pirates (3-3, 1-1 AAC) this coming Saturday.

Sunday's AP Poll has
Army at #23!

As for Navy, they must have had some truly GREAT practices during their bye week.

They went from unranked to
#25 in Sunday's AP Poll!

Maybe it had something to do with
Sunday being the U.S. Navy's
249th Birthday

On a historic note, this is the first time that Army and Navy have both been ranked in the Top 25 at the same time since 1960.

In 1960, under second year Head Coach Dale Hall, Army would finish the season unranked with a 6-3-1 record. The Black Knights were led by team Co-Captain and All-American Guard selection Al Vanderbush. Army battled in all ten games including their tie with Pittsburgh (7-7) and their losses to Penn State (27-16), Nebraska (14-9) and Navy (17-12).

As for Navy in 1960, they were coached by Wayne Hardin who was also in his second season at Navy. The unquestioned leader of the Midshipmen was Heisman Trophy winning Running Back Joe Bellino. This Navy eleven would finish the year as the country's #4 ranked team with a 9-2-0 record that included a 15-14 win over our beloved Washington Huskies who went 10-1-0 that season after beating #1 ranked Minnesota 17-7 in the Rose Bowl. Navy's two losses came to #15 Duke, 19-10, and in the Orange Bowl against #5 ranked Missouri, 21-14.

Now as for that one spot guaranteed
to the top ranked Group of Five
conference team . . .

This week it is again #15 Boise State (5-1, 3-0 MWC) out of the Mountain West Conference.

No panic, keep winning and everything will take care of itself come playoff time.

Although our Brasil Onças IFAF South American Tournament in December went kaput in our attempt to qualify for IFAF World Championship Tournament in Germany next Summer, the European Qualifying Rounds were in full swing this weekend.

Ever powerful Team Austria had an
easy time of it against Team Hungary

No trouble at all for Team Italy
against Team Switzerland either

On to the Major League Baseball playoffs . . .

Then there were four

The NLCS and ALCS were set

National League Championship Series
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets

It appears that most of America is rooting for the Mets, even Alaska and Hawaii.

How can that be?

American League Championship Series
Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Yankees

The whole WORLD hates the Yankees apparently.

I get that.

San Diego is still reeling
after losing to the Dodgers

This post-season shutout streak by the Dodgers' pitching staff was far from over yet.

Sunday night, the NLCS started
at Dodger Stadium

L.A.'s starting pitcher, Jack Flaherty, was EN FUEGO!

As was the entire Dodgers team
in winning the first game of the
best-of-seven NLCS

Oh, also that shut out pitching streak is now . . .

. . . at MLB historic levels

More minutiae for Paul Sabolić
and Michael D'Antuono to mull over

There will be a test at our next lunch meeting. Bring a Blue Book or two, blue or black ink pen only.

Truer every day

If Harris and the Democrats win
the upcoming election, this may
become a reality

Just saying, I don't want to influence your vote an any way, shape or form.

I see no problem with this at all!
