A Tea, Friends and a Politically Correct High School Football Game

Friday, October 12, 2024

We enjoyed another busy day during a pleasant Southern California Fall day.

It started with the arrival on a no school day of . . .

. . . our beloved granddaughter Mary

After a morning of arts and crafts plus some of Mary's inventive games it was time for two memorable lunches.

Mary and Laurie changed into
clothes fitting for their special lunch

They were off to Camarillo's All Things Tea for a traditional English tea lunch. They told me that they had a splendid time of it.

At the same time, I drove down to La Cañada-Flintridge to the Hill Street Café for an informative, fun filled lunch with Paul Sabolić and Michael D'Antuono, two dear friends who are also University of Washington alums.

For national security reasons, no photos were allowed of the three of us together enjoying our two hour dining experience.

It's Friday so I needed to go to a high school football game. Due to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement, most high school games in our area were played on Thursday, most but not all.

I headed into the beautiful San Fernando Valley, to watch another C.I.F.-Los Angeles City Section game for the lead in the West Valley League.

Both of these schools have undergone mascot changes because of the seemingly non-stop efforts of the Politically Correct police in California.

Birmingham H.S.
Braves/Patriots
1 Win - 4 Losses overall
1 Win - 0 Losses West Valley League

From its founding in 1953 until 1998, 45 years, Birmingham was known as the Braves. Then, in 1998 due to concerns for the Native American community, they changed their mascot to Patriots.

I do like that the Brave and Patriot seen above are the same person and that both have that war paint stripe running down their cheeks.

Birmingham has been a power in the C.I.F.-Los Angeles City section for years having won nine Section Championships (1963, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023). Remembering that there was no football played in 2020 due to the Covid epidemic, the Patriots have won the last four Section DI championships.

As for their 1-4 record, it must be noted that Birmingham opted to play their four non-league games against C.I.F.-Southern Section powers St. Bonaventure, Oak Park, Hart and Calabasas who are currently a combined 20-9 on the season.

Birmingham won their West Valley League opener last week over the Chatsworth Chancellors, 64-0.

Birmingham was on the road this Friday night against the . . .

El Camino Real H.S.
Conquistadores/Royals/Bears
2 Wins - 4 Losses overall
1 Win - 0 Losses West Valley League

Just like Birmingham, El Camino Real had undergone a Politically Correct mascot change about three years ago.

Their new mascot is the Royals

Why the Bear you ask if they are the Royals?

I finally found the answer tonight when I queried the person sitting next to me. I was told that the President of the El Camino Real Charter High School is a rather large man who played basketball at UCLA back in the day. Due to his height and considerable bulk, his sobriquet in college was "The Bear."

While the official El Camino Real H.S. colors are dark blue, light blue and camel, this logo looks more like UCLA's colors and mascot.

Hmmm . . .

I was again joined by the entire
Sabolić Clan for the game

Seeing them all at El Camino Real's Head Coach Jason Sabolić's game was a treat.

It should be noted that it was a BEAUTIFUL night for American football.

El Camino Real took the field
with confidence and . . .

. . . and some swagger

Then the game started

As the old saying goes, "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth."

The Braves/Patriot punched the Conquistadores/Royals/Bears first, fast and often.

It was 43-0 Birmingham at Halftime. I thought that this would be a good time to beat the traffic for the 35 minute drive back to Camarillo.

Final Score
Birmingham (2-4, 2-0 WVL) - 57
El Camino Real (2-5, 1-1 WVL) - 7

At Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers
won the NLDS. Three games to two!

The Dodgers pitching staff was spectacular in not only shutting out the Padres in games three and four, they held San Diego's potent offense to no runs in the last 24 innings of the series!

I thought you might enjoy this
as the Dodgers move on to the
National League Championship Series

The NLCS starts on Sunday with the New York Mets playing against the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine in a best-of-seven series with the winner going to the World Series.

WOW!

All that yardage in and his team still lost in OT, 77-76.

The winners in this Louisiana high school shootout on Thursday night were the Captain Shreve Gators (4-2) over the Evangel Christian Academy (1-5).

I will ALWAYS vote for the
1951-1969 logo that I knew as a youth

Another new spot opened in
Camarillo today

No tacos on the menu but we still have to give it a go in the next few days.

It was a good day with family and friends despite the outcome of the El Camino Real game.
