Friday Night Lights, Los Angeles City Section Style

Friday, October 5, 2024
In what was a last minute, game time decision, I decided to fly solo on what was a BEAUTIFUL night for American high school football to Woodland Hills, California.

The game of choice tonight was a Los Angeles City Section game and West Valley League opener billed as "The Battle of Woodland Hills."

Taft H.S. Toreadors
2 Wins - 3 Losses
at

El Camino Real H.S. Conquistadores

No, wait, I forgot that the school was forced to make a political correct change to their nickname a few years ago.

El Camino Real H.S. Royals
1 Win - 4 Losses

Why the bear logo if they are now the Royals?

I joined Joanne and Paul Sabolić
in Row 1 of the stands in front of the
Conquistadores-Royals-Bears students

Their son Jason is the fifth year Head Football Coach at El Camino Real.

Row 1 offered a different view
of the red clad Taft eleven

El Camino Real, a.k.a., ELCO,
looked sharp in their new black
uniforms that were unveiled tonight

With this two-point conversion
ELCO took control of the game that
they would never relinquish

End of the First Quarter
El Camino Real - 6
Taft - 0

The Second Quarter had lots of
big plays but the number of penalty
flags thrown disrupted the flow of
the action and made for a LONG night

To be frank, during the lulls in the action, Joanne and I started to become fascinated by the mass of student humanity that kept shuffling by us between Row 1 and the fence separating the fans from the field.

One could have written their
Sociology Doctoral Dissertation
on the interactions we witnessed

The kids were everywhere and
really not into the game

I was SHOCKED!

It was ELCO's Homecoming Game

Halftime
El Camino Real - 15
Taft - 0

Taft came out throwing in
the Third Quarter

See the ball in the upper right corner?

Then what are the three Taft linemen looking at to the far left?

The Third Quarter was chock full of action and, unfortunately, way too many penalties.

End of the Third Quarter
El Camino Real - 30
Taft - 6

In the Fourth Quarter, ELCO let
their female kicker, Ashlyn Delaet,
 loose on the field

Ashlyn delivered on this PAT

Final Score
El Camino Real (2-4, 1-0 WVL) - 37
Taft (2-4, 0-1 WVL) - 12

The game lasted a little over three hours thanks to the over officious referees' flag happiness.

It was a good, and much needed, win for ELCO as their coaches and players were absolutely ecstatic to take home The Battle of Woodland Hills Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

GO CONQUISTADORES-ROYALS-BEARS!

It was an enjoyable game to watch and spending three hours chatting with Paul and Joanne is always a treat.
