Not One But TWO Flag Football Games in One Day!

Wednesday, October 10, 2024

Jacob's Las Colinas Middle School coed flag football team was back in action today, so that was our main focus by far.

Dare I say that it was a BEAUTIFUL day for American flag football!

Our combatants today:

Season Record Unknown

2 Wins - 1 Loss

The calm before the storm

The Mustangs kicked off to start the game

Jacob, #24, flying around the
field on Defense as a Linebacker

Here comes the Panthers
vaunted Sweep play . . .

. . . the Mustangs pursuit was up to the task

Another Sweep and . . .

. . . another Mustangs' stop

Mustangs' DE setting the edge

Leaping to no avail against
the Las Colinas Defense

Jacob started at TE too

GO GIRL!

Short passes were . . .

. . . in full effect to start the game

End of the First Quarter
Las Colinas - 0
Los Primeros - 0

Mustangs attempting a Sweep Pass

A short completion in the flat . . .

. . . turns into . . .

. . . the first TD of the game for
the home team Mustangs!

Going for two on the extra point . . .

. . . pass completed for an 8-0 lead

The Panthers kickoff return unit
did a good job on this play

You just need to pull the flag,
not pants the ball carrier

Mustangs' defenders defending

SURROUND HIM!

Los Primeros had just scored a TD on the previous play and Jacob was able to pull this Panthers flag short of the Goal Line to preserve the Mustangs' lead at 8-6.

The Las Colinas speedy QB
breaking into the open

A run up the middle for a
minimal Mustangs gain

Lots of hair flying on this down

Jacob forcefully batting
away a Panthers' pass

Carrying the ball
"Like a Loaf of Bread"

Or perhaps she is a rugby player in the off-season.

Halftime Score
Las Colinas - 8
Los Primeros - 6

Our QB is extremely FAST!

Los Primeros pursuit corralling
the Las Colinas QB

Another effective short pass play

Running the Alley

Run to Daylight

Vince Lombardi would have been proud.

There was lots of action in this stanza, but no scoring.

End of the Third Quarter
Las Colinas - 8
Los Primeros - 6

Mustangs' Offense getting to the edge

Her secret weapon is a pony tail
to the Panthers defender's face
momentarily blinding him

Good blocking by the Panthers' two
Offensive tackles but . . .

. . . Jacob came up the middle
quickly on a Blitz

Jacob's pressure forced an incomplete
pass on a key Third Down play

This flag pull on the subsequent
Fourth Down play gave the ball
back to the Mustangs on downs

QB and Coach discussing how best
to navigate the last 2 minutes of
this nail biting clash

I think he took one for the team
on this completed pass play

Finally, after all sorts of timeouts by both teams, it came down to the Mustangs facing a Fourth Down and one yard to go near mid-field with about 25 seconds left in this low scoring, defensive struggle.

Would the Mustangs Punt or go for it?

Las Colinas went for it and this
clutch, shoe string catch . . .

. . . gained about three yards and
the needed First Down!

With the Panthers out of time outs, all that was needed was for the Mustangs to get into Victory Formation and kneel down one time.

They did it!

Final Score
Las Colinas Mustangs (3-1) - 8
Los Primeros Panthers (?-?) - 6

There was not much time for Jacob to celebrate as it was now 5:10 p.m. and his Pop Warner practice started in the park adjacent to Las Colinas in just 20 minutes. A quick change and he was ready to roll. At this age, keeping busy can be a good thing.

As the end of the first half of the season draws near, four games down and five games to go, let's review the Mustangs' results and remaining schedule.

Mary wants to take over from her
Dad as the team's Down Marker

We were not done with Flag Football as I joined Mary and Michael for Senior Night at Newbury Park H.S.

Fillmore H.S. Flashes (2-16)
at

Newbury Park H.S. Panthers (11-6)

Michael and Mary

Michael has one of tonight's NPHS Seniors, #6, in class who has somehow made a connection with Mary and gave Mary her away jersey to wear on this chilly night.

The Panthers warming up

The game was a blur with
NPHS dominating as expected

Our #6 had fun playing in the blocking
chutes with her new found friends

At Halftime, with the game well
in hand, we made our exit

It was getting colder, it was 8:15 p.m. and both Mary and Michael had school on Thursday. We made the right choice.

As for the outcome of the game . . .

Final Score
Newbury Park (12-6) - 43
Fillmore (2-17) - 6

GREAT news today!

This Mexican restaurant had their Grand Opening in Camarillo today. They already have two successful and highly thought of locations in Oxnard and Ventura.

Laurie joined me for lunch and she was quite pleased with her Gordita.

As for me, I liked my two tacos so much that I ordered two more. It is not a hole-in-the-wall and a bit too grime free but still their food was . . .

AWESOME!

We will definitely come back soon!

I wish I had one to pass down
to McDonald loving Jacob

by-state all-time MLB Home Run Leaders

Speaking of Major League Baseball . . .

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the
Padres in San Diego tonight

This do-or-die victory evened this best-of-five National League Divisional Series at two games apiece.

The Padres will now travel up Interstate Five to play the Dodgers in Game Five at Chavez Ravine's Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

The winner goes on to play the New York Mets in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series that starts next Sunday at either Dodger Stadium or the Padres' Petco Park.

The disappointed loser goes to Cancun to start their off season.

A busy day indeed!
