On a cool, overcast Saturday, we met again at Camarillo H.S. for the last track meet of the Spring.
The Rotary Club of Camarillo has sponsored the Hap Rapp Memorial Track Meet since 1960.
For 65 years now, this meet has brought together young 4th to 8th grade athletes from the 15 elementary and middle schools that service our community for a day of track and field events.
Athletes compete only against students from their own grade level, boys vs. boys and girls vs. girls.
Each athlete can compete in a maximum of three individual events plus a relay.
The top five overall finishers by grade and sex in each event earn a trip to the podium to collect a highly prized ribbon in front of the assembled multitudes.
Additionally, a trophy is given at the end of the day to the Best Boy and Girl Athlete in each grade level based solely on how they placed in their three individual events. An athlete gets 10 points for a first place finish, eight points for second place, six points for third place, four points for fourth place and two points for fifth place.
Today's meet would be the first Hap Rapp Meet for Mary who would be running for her Tierra Linda Elementary School. Again, Fourth Grade is the youngest age allowed to compete in the meet. Mary was scheduled to run in the 50 Meters, the 400 Meters and the 4 x 100 Meter Relay. She would also vie in the Long Jump.
Jacob was in his fourth ever Hap Rapp Meet and was today competing as a Seventh Grader for his Las Colinas Middle School. Jacob's four event schedule called for slots in the 400 Meters, 800 Meters, 4 x 100 Meter Relay plus the Long Jump.

Mary was a bit disconsolate at having not taken home a ribbon from her first ever Hap Rapp Meet. We reminded her that when Jacob was a Fourth Grader in his first Hap Rapp meet, he did not step onto the podium either.
Keep working hard Mary.

It was the Opening Weekend
of the European League of Football's
fifth season
All 16 teams were in action on the same weekend for once.
Three blowouts, three competitive contests and two games that came right down to the wire.
Everybody still has eleven more games to play this Summer, so it's no time to panic or get too confident just yet.
