Life Serves Up Another Great Weekend

Fri.-Sun., April 29-May 1, 2022

Sports. It seems to always be about sports.

Why should this week be any different?

The Washington Huskies had their
Spring Game on Saturday

After the last couple seasons, this is the time for hope among all of us who root for our beloved Dawgs.

Speaking of hope, I pray that this season we can actually win our first two games at home against Kent State and Portland State.

Meanwhile, in the Italian American football front . . .

Skorpions WIN!

I was up bright and early for Saturday's 5:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Savings Time Kickoff in Varese that was being like streamed.

After beating these self same Legnano Frogs 42-0 last Saturday and then needing to play the 5-0 Bergamo Lions in the season finale, a let down was a real possibility.

The Skorpions were indeed sluggish in the First Quarter but finished strong.

in his wake

Speaking of the field, for the first time since 2019, this home game was held at cozy Skorpion Field in Vedano Olona.

I really loved playing games on this field that has only been used by the Men's team for practices in recent years.

This win sets up a great regular season finale with the 4-1 Skorpions traveling to Bergamo in two weeks for the rematch with the 5-0 Lions.

Since the Lions won the first game in Varese between these two clubs, 31-28, a few weeks ago, the Skorpions need to beat the Lions by four or more points in order to get the #1 seed out of Girone B into the DII Playoffs.

The current standings in the three Italian DII Girones are:

GIRONE A
Torino Giaguari 4-0
Torino Reapers 2-2
Ferrara Aquile 1-2
Reggio Emilia Hogs 0-3

GIRONE B
Bergamo Lions 5-0
Varese Skorpions 4-1
  Legnano Frogs 1-4
Verona Redskins 0-5

GIRONE C
Padova Saints 3-2
Isonzo Sentinels 2-2
Savona Pirates 2-2
Cernusco Daemons 2-3

Our old club, the Thun Tigers,
beat the Geneva Seahawks this weekend
in Switzerland's top league

Bern Grizzlies 5-0
Calanda Broncos 4-1

Basel Gladiators 0-2
Zurich Gladiators 0-3

We had one of Jacob's always interesting YMCA basketball games on Saturday.

Warming up on the Y's outdoor court

The team looked better
warming up today

He REALLY wants to dunk
but that is still FAR in the future
I believe

warm-ups moved onto the game court

When the game started, Jacob
NEVER stopped running

in the corner

It did not go in.

LOTS of jump balls at this level

another steal

He is a solid defender.

Contesting an opponent's shot

The team played much better than last week, especially on offense but still lost, 21-16.

We had been given two tickets to the inter-league Dodger game on Saturday night against the American League's Detroit Tigers by the one and only "Friend of the Program," Paul Sabolic.

It shaped up as an historical contest as the Dodgers' starting pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, only needed four more strikeouts to surpass Hall-of-Famer Don Sutton's team record of 2,696 career strikeouts.

As is usual when Laurie and I go to Dodger Stadium with the exorbitant food prices, we like to go out to an early dinner before we go into the Dodger Stadium parking lot.

I opted to take her to some place we had not gone to for years.

Hollywood's Miceli's Pizzeria where
Laurie and I shared a pizza on our first
date back in 1965

It's all about the ambiance inside
Miceli's on Las Palmas Ave. just off
of Hollywood Blvd.

I like these old, empty Chianti
bottles hanging from the ceiling

It could get interesting during an earthquake.

Cozy bar upstairs at Miceli's

While the atmosphere was as good as we both remembered it, the pizza was not.

I guess things can change after 57 years.

After our meal, we headed to Dodger Stadium.

In Chinatown we saw Regular Gas
at this Shell station selling for a mere
$6.65 a gallon

They were getting plenty of media intrusion after Kershaw's record tying third strikeout.

Here is Clayton Kershaw's historic
fourth strikeout and the fans reaction

The new all-time Brooklyn-Los Angeles
Dodgers career strikeout leader

Kershaw finished with seven strikeouts on the night giving him a tidy Dodger career total now of 2,700 in his career.

When he left the game after six innings with the Dodgers and Tigers all knotted up at 1-1.

The Tigers would outscore the Dodgers 4-0 in the last three innings to win the game 5-1.

With this final score, the Dodgers record dropped to 13-7 while Detroit improved to 7-13.

Again,

THANK YOU PAUL SABOLIC!
