Thurs.-Sat., July 8-10, 2021
Our last few days in Las Vegas would be marked by three things, good food, wholesome family fun and intense HEAT!
This dry wash near Andy, Jenn and
Kevin's home was seen during my
morning walk in an "attempt" to
beat the heat
Technically I was succeeding as it was only 93°F/34°C at 8:00 a.m on the way to a high of 115°F/46°C later in the day.
Still it made walking any appreciable distance on the way to my 10,000+ step goal for the day a tad bit daunting.
I needed a better plan.
EUREKA!
Why walk in the blaring direct sunlight of Las Vegas in July when I could take my steps in air conditioned comfort?
Thus we drove to the Bass Pro Shop and Silverado Casino complex to shop and walk.
Bass Pro Shop has any and everything your heart desires if you are in to the outdoors.
It is also a nine year olds dream hangout as it turns out.
As always in such skirmishes,
low antlers win

out the fish pond
That's a BIG fish in this small pond
Jacob, Kevin and Mike

huge aquarium
The two boys had had enough, they just had to try to land a big one.
Well done, lads
In the evening at about 9:00 p.m., it had cooled off to about 102°F/39C, making it ideal conditions for . . .
. . . a game of laser tag in the park
near Kevin's home
In order to beat the heat on Friday, we headed to one of Las Vegas' Premium Outlet Malls to buy gear for the two boys' upcoming soccer seasons while I did a few laps.
In Vegas kitsch was being sold
at discount prices
A Piaggio in Nevada!
Sorry, but I never saw anyone
wearing anything this crazy
in Milano
Getting in touch with our inner
German bratwurst
Don't forget the pretzels
and mustard
Two happy campers
I like the Hofbräuhaus'
colorful ceiling
A hearty meal to be sure, but I still needed more steps, what to do in the evening?
Can anyone say IKEA?
Oh those Swedish jokesters, on the huge Cinnamon bun sign, underneath the $1 square, in small letters it says *Not actual size.
The combination of solid air conditioning, a well laid out walking path and the need for Mike and Laurie to purchase a few items made my last few thousand steps bearable.
I love it when a plan comes together.
Still, the life saver this week was . . .
. . . this pool in Kevin's backyard
We all went into it at least twice a day.
We had such a good time but on Saturday it was time to head home to the mild 80°F/26°C temperatures of Camarillo.
We stopped at Eddie's World
near Barstow after two hours
of driving to stretch our legs
Candy and stuffed toys
EVERYWHERE you looked
Mike and Jacob had never been to Eddie's World before and were impressed.
I guess Eddie is a big game hunter
Outside of Edwards Air Force Base
near Mojave, California
They have an interesting sounding Research Center on the base but it is closed to the public due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Jacob's serious look in the jet's shade
This jet is located just outside
of the Edwards AFB's entry gate
Meanwhile, in Italian DIII news . . .
The 6-0 Catania Elephants are hosting
the 6-0 Roma Pretoriani on Sunday
The winner will be the DIII Southern Conference Champion and will play in the DIII National Championship game on Saturday, July 24th in the Tuscan seaside city of Cecina.
The Elephants were in the Italian First Division when I coached them in 2008 and 2009. I could not have asked for a better group of people to work with on my first EuroBall assignment.
With this win on Saturday . . . |
The Leoni earned the right to play
the Elephants-Pretoriani winner
for the National Championship
Here's hoping the Elephants beat the Roma squad and play for all the marbles in two weeks.
