A happy St. Patrick's Day to all of our would-be Irish friends around the world!
After a great week of sunny, warm days in Lombardia, today would be overcast and a bit rainy.
In other words, it was as great day for . . .
SKORPION WEATHER!
Which was perfect as Skorpions Field would be the scene of the first U13, U15 and U17 flag football tournaments of the year.
Four clubs were battling today
Besides our beloved Varese Skorpions, the Bergamo Lions, Cernusco Daemons and Milano Rhinos were all here to compete, weather be damned!
The Skorpion teams would all play one game in the morning and a second one after the lunch break. We would all play against the teams from Bergamo and Milano but we would not play any of the Daemons teams today.
Giorgio and I left the Villa Scorpion II complex at 8:00 a.m. to first have a cappuccino and a brioche (chocolate for me) at Pasticceria Marabelli and then head to Skorpion Field to set things up before the 10:00 a.m. start.
U13 All-Galaxy LB Alessandro Mascetti
was of great help to me getting all
of the end zone pylons in place
Skorpion U17s just before their
first game
While I really like the Rhinos
logo on their jersey . . .
. . . the Daemons logo is more intriguing
and just as demonic as you would suspect
The Bergamo Lion logo was nothing special.
This may still be residual hate from the 2008 and 2009 seasons in Catania playing and losing twice to the Lions in Bergamo.
Three fields, 25 yards wide by
60 yards long, were ready to ROLL!
U13 Morning Game
The U13s were playing
the Milano Rhinos
The U13 Rhinos were hitting on all
cylinders as they raced to a 39-0 win
U15 Morning game
Our U15s were also opening with
their Milano Rhinos counterparts
Ivan had a good day catching passes
QB Piccolo with options
U15 Coach D.J. is passionate
about the game!
Our U15s beat the Rhinos 28-20.
U17 Morning Game
BOMBS AWAY!
Our U17s were playing the Bergamo Lions in their first contest.
One of Filippo Petrillo's
many TD catches today
Skorpion attack ready to blast off!
The U17s played a gutsy game in pulling out a 33-30 win over the Lions.
The morning games over, it was time for the tournament's lunch break.
The Skorpion Snack Bar's special plate
today consisted of gnocco frito, fromaggio
and salumi
That's fried dough, cheese and assorted Italian cured meats.
That plate of goodies plus a beer hit the spot and was OH, SO GOOD FOR ME TOO!
U13 Afternoon Game
Skorpions vs. Lions
Emma Petrillo had a great game at
RB scoring a whopping THREE TDs!
QB Tommy Bulgheroni
slinging the rock!
Simone Molinari about to make
am important catch
Tommy is a Mad Bomber at heart
LB Alessandro Mascetti about
to break up a pass
Simone is WIDE OPEN!
WR Alex Bormolini with the ball
Emma picking up
more valuable yardage
Alex with as TD catch
RB Andrea Maurizi is the second
coming of Jim Taylor
He is the Thunder to Emma's Lightning!
The U13s bounced back to finish with a 1-1 record on the day thanks to a hard fought 25-18 victory over the Bergamo Lions.
U15 Afternoon Game
QB Samuel "Picciolo" Bulgheroni
had lots of positive moments today
Piccolo was cool under the relentless
pressure of the Bergamo Lions player
Free Flowing Davide in the
open field
U15 Trickeration!
Ivan Bulgheroni runs well after
catch a pass
Davide open in the flat
Part of INTERPOL's most wanted list,
LB #11 Gabriele "il Doctore" Maurizi
is a stone cold assassin!
Our U15s finished the day with a 1-1 record in today's tournament after losing to the Lions by a score of 25-7.
U17 Afternoon Game
Great pass coverage by
Federico "DJ" Digennaro
DB Filippo Zanon closing FAST!
Stefano Tosco and DJ making a play
A great effort by this Rhinos DB broke
ups what would have been a Skorpion TD
The Milano Rhinos getting off
the line of scrimmage
DJ hustling again with
Dario Tirolo coming up on the play
The Skorpion U17s finished with a perfect 2-0 record today after beating the Rhinos 26-19.
It was indeed a BEAUTIFUL day for Skorpion American flag football!
Good job today by everybody in the Skorpion's family!
