HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!
Week #8 of the 2012 NLB season schedule had us hosting the Geneva Seahawks who were the champions of the 2011 NLC league.
We were blessed with a good complement of healthy players for this game and had enjoyed two good, spirited practices this week. It is fun working with players who are primarily playing because of their love of the game.
As usual, my picture taking was limited to pre and post game activities. Our excellent Team Photographer Thomas Vonlanthan's pictures will be posted later this week.

OLD HANDS ON DECK!
As insurance, because we were a bit short on players last week, we suited up two wily old veterans today for the first time this season.
On the left is our U-19 DB/Receivers coach, #10 Arne Denecke who played a bit at DB and actually made a nice open field tackle in the fourth quarter. Some say that he just could not get out of the way of the ball carrier fast enough. I say that it was a good solid hit!
On the right is our Team Physician, #16 Dr. Christian Warzecha who played WR today. The Doctor has vast experience playing QB and WR in both his native Germany as well as in Switzerland. The Doctor got one of his colleagues to cover the medical end of things at the game today for him.
They both did a good job for us today, Every Man A Tiger!

THUN TIGERS (1-3)
Game Summary
FIRST QUARTER:
Thun receives the opening kickoff but is quickly forced to punt.
The Thun defense comes out strong and forces the Seahawks to punt the ball back to the Tigers.
The Tigers catch a break when a Geneva interception is cancelled due to a Seahawk penalty but on the next play Geneva recovers a Tiger fumble at the Thun 18 yard line.
Geneva is in Goal Line offense mode as the First Quarter comes to an end with the score Thun 0 - Geneva 0.
SECOND QUARTER:
Geneva continues their drive but a big play, a tackle for loss by OLB Johannes Brunner, stalls their drive. Geneva opts for a 30 yard Field Goal attempt but a bad snap ends their scoring opportunity. Another great Tiger Goal Line Stand!
Thun moves the ball but has to punt. A roughing the punter penalty keeps the drive alive and the Tigers take advantage finishing the drive on a 5 yard run by QB Rolf Zybach. Niklaus Rhyner kicks the PAT, Thun leads 7-0.
Thun's defense forces a three and out punt.
Thun gets a couple of first downs but is forced to use their secret weapon, the punting leg of Niklaus Rhyner who pins Geneva deep in their end of the field.
Geneva's drive is halted by the half time break. At the half, it is Thun 7 - Geneva 0.
THIRD QUARTER:
Tiger Nick Rhyner booms the kickoff and the Tigers kickoff team tackles the Seahawk return man at their 9 yard line, GREAT COVERAGE! Geneva punts.
The Tigers take advantage of good field position as QB Rolf Zybach scores again, this time from 2 yards out. Rhyner adds the extra point as the Tigers stretch their lead to 14-0.
Rhyner hits another great kickoff and the coverage team gets there again to tackle the Geneva return man at their 8 yard line. The Seahawks mix up their plays well in putting together a good drive that ends with a 25 yard TD pass. They decide to go for two points but OLB Johannes Brunner tackles the ball carrier short of paydirt as the quarter ends, Thun 14 - Geneva 6.
FOURTH QUARTER:
The Tigers have to punt and Niklaus Rhyner delivers again!
This time, at Strong Safety, Niklaus Rhyner intercepts a Geneva pass, this guy is everywhere!
Thun has to punt again and, of course, Niklaus Rhyner hits another missle shot to again pin Geneva deep in their end of the field.
The Thun defense is strong again and on fourth down block a Seahawk punt that is recovered at the 3 yard line by Mischa Künzi.
Rolf Zybach performs the Hat Trick and scores his third TD of the day, this time from 1 yard out. The PAT is partially blocked and bounces out of the end zone. Thun leads 20-6 with very little time left in the game.
The Seahawks are driving as the game comes to a close.
FINAL SCORE: Thun 20 - Geneva 6
Good team win as we played better in all phases of the game today. Up next for us is a tough road game in Luzern next Sunday to take on the Lions who played the winless Fribourg Cardinals today.

NEWS FLASH: Breaking news from Catania, Sicily - The Catania Elephants moved into sole possession of first place in the Italian Football League by winning a defensive struggle over the Bologna Warriors 65-41. The Elephants are now 7-1 while the Warriors drop to 7-2, tied with the also 7-2 Parma Panthers. As a bonus, every time a team named the Seahawks loses, Pete Carroll feels a little twinge in his stomach.
I'm all for Pete feeling uncomfortable.
Congrats on the win!
