Ladyhawke Comes to Malibu

Friday was "Wash Day" at Malibu with LOTS of loads to clean. After a few days at the shore, it was probably a very good thing to get out of the sun for a day.

As I noted in an earlier post this week, our QB, Arturo Sanchez, moved into Malibu on Tuesday after Denver and Paul moved out.

These first few days with Arturo has reminded me of one of my favorite movies, 1985's "Ladyhawke". The main characters are Phillipe "The Mouse" Gaston (Mathew Broderick), Captain Etienne Navarre (Rutger Hauer), Isabeau d'Anjou (Michelle Pfeiffer), Father Imperius (Leo McKern) and the evil antagonist, the Bishop of Aquila (John Wood).

The story revolves around Phillipe and Father Imperius helping to break the evil spell that the Bishop has placed on the two lovers, Etienne and Isabeau, by the Bishop. The Bishop wants Isabeau for himself but when he realizes that that is not going to happen because of her love for Etienne, he condemns them through the use of black magic.

His spell turns Isabeau into a hawk from sunrise to sunset before transforming back into herself. At the same time his spell turns Etienne into a wolf from sunset to sunrise before he reverts to himself. Thus they still travel together through Italy trying to find a way to break the curse only seeing each other in human form for a split second twice a day at sunrise and sunset during their transformations.

Enter Phillipe and Father Imperius to save the day. Fun movie, much of it filmed in the L'Aguila area that recently experienced a devastating earthquake.

Why do I bring this up? The first four days of living with Arturo is a lot like the "Ladyhawke" plot minus the evil curse.

Arturo lives for the night and we live for the beach. As a result, we leave for the day in the morning and he takes off in the evening to enjoy Catania's abundant nightlife. We see each other for just that one or two brief moments during the day.

Laurie, Arturo and Valentina

We decided to make dinner for Arturo and Valentina Friday night at Malibu to get a chance to get to know them both a little better. Arturo is fluent in his native Spanish, Italian and English. Valentina is fluent in her native Italian and Spanish and is working on her English.

We had a very nice meal and we DID get to know each other a little better, GOOD PEOPLE!

I always liked "Ladyhawke," too, except I could never figure out why everyone had British accents.

The British were actually big in Sicily's Marsala area and gave the wine industry a big push in the late 1800's.

Admiral Lord Nelson even had a large estate here in the Mt. Etna foothills.

Still doesn't explain the British accents in northern Italy.
