A Working/Exploring Monday in Gijón

Monday, January 13, 2025

Today I alternated several times between the work need to finish up breaking down and analyzing last Saturday's game video on HUDL with trips into the old city to get some much needed exercise and run some errands.

My first journey outside of my seaside apartment that today was dubbed "La Cabaña," I needed to check up on something that Laurie mentioned in yesterday's daily phone call.

She said that on her Find My Friends app, the map says that La Cabaña is not in one of the three boat buildings. I thought that she was correct but I checked to be sure.

La Cabaña is on the ground floor
of the building on the left

Laurie was correct, the first of the three boat buildings is on the right.

The three boat buildings sit side-
by-side next to our building

When viewed in profile, they all look like the prow of ships.

I walked past them to find a new breakfast spot on my way to the Gijón Train Station.

I read of Trump Imperialism
in the local paper while dining

In essence they believe the issue with Greenland, which belongs to the sovereign nation of Denmark, harkens back to the U.S. expansionist era of the late 19th and early 20th-century.

The tone of this article is not favorable to Trump's concepts of power at all, MAGA.

Imagine that.

Another modern apartment
building on my walk to . . .

. . . the Gijón Train Station

I found it to be only an eight minute walk from my front door.

The reason for my visit

I was there to purchase a Tarjeta Dorada or Gold Card for just six Euros. The card is good for one year and allows us older folks in their Golden Years to ride on all Spanish trains with a 50% discount.

Such a deal!

I plan to use it for the first time on Wednesday for a trip to Spain's oldest Christian city, Oviedo.

Funky chimneys

The Palace of Justice is located
behind the train station

The old chimney between two
of the boat buildings

After returning home and working for a couple of hours, I hit the road again.

For fat people only?

My kind of place to be sure!

Cement as art

I stumbled upon this great
little book store with . . .

. . . lots and lots of English
language for sale, AWESOME!

This Spanish language book about
the unrest in Asturias in October
of 1934 looked interesting

I asked the two informative book sellers about the book and found out that the violent unrest in this beautiful province at that time was the precursor to the bloody Spanish Civil War that started in 1936 and ended in 1939.

They suggested that I first read Albert Camus' Rebelión en Asturias, also in Spanish. It is only 104 pages long so I bought it to learn more about local history and expand my Spanish language skills.

A Dilema in Gijón

One of my maxims when out of the USA is to try to eat the local cuisine and eschew patronizing Starbucks, Burger King, McDonald's and the like.

My problem is that I have only eaten at a Popeye's in the USA twice in my 77 years.

Thus, would it be a betrayal of my beliefs if I ordered one of Popeye's famed chicken sandwiches since I have no real history with this franchise?

I'll need help on this one.

Tourists look up while
locals looked down

I am definitely still in full blown tourist mode.

What a beautiful building.

And another one

Still loving the tile work
on some of the older edifices

An older edifice

These Ale-Hop stores were one of
Laurie's favorites when we lived
in Switzerland in 2012

I really need to get back to the
Mercado del Sur in the morning
to see if more shops are open than
in the afternoons

Stand up comedy while
dining on tapas

A nice concept if you ask me.

Breakfast is quite inexpensive
throughout Gijón

Back home again for another two hours of work before heading out one last time.

I never tire of this walk
through the arcade

Still looking up as night falls

Back to the Jovellanos Public Library

I applied for and received a temporary library card, my permanent one will be ready for pickup next week.

My first read from the library's
solid English language book section
will be this classic tome

Time for three delicious tapas
and a caña at 100 Montaditos

A caña is a small beer.

A former Mariner team sponsor
with a still troubling name for
a Gastronomía Mexicana

Sidra is fermented apple juice which
is a main product of Asturias

It is good tasting and goes down ever so smoothly.

Or so I am told.

I returned home for the final time and finished wrapping up our Coslada game review. Now it is on to the next game in Madrid against the two-time defending Spanish National Champion, Las Rozas Black Demons on January 25th.

On to the net . . .

Our first ever 12 team CFP
has been interesting

With #7 Notre Dame squaring off against #8 Ohio State, it really begs the validity of past playoff champions in first the old two team and then four team playoff systems.

I went to bed tonight long
before the Rams-Vikings game
kicked off in Arizona

I'll learn the outcome when I wake up on Tuesday.

Go Rams, GO!

More excellent photos taken by team photographer Felipe from our game were posted on the team website.

Here are some of my favorites.

We had a GREAT crowd, it was
the largest in two years I was told

Gijón Nose Tackle vs. Coslada Center

A fleet, young Mariners receiver
trying to pull away

Another Gijón reception

BOMBS AWAY!

It's about to get real!

Walter, our Colombian CB, making one
of his several great plays on Saturday

Our import DB, James Douglas,
held this Camioneros American
receiver to just one catch on the day

Our passionate Head Coach,
Nacho Alvaréz

I enjoyed a good day that saw me falling more in love with the city of Gijón and its American football family.
