The Rest of Our Labor Day Weekend

Sun.-Mon., September 3-4, 2023

We have long held the belief that the safest place to be on any long, three day weekend is at home.

Ergo, Laurie and I were content to lounge around Camarillo's Casa Contreras while others were slogging their way around the southland in a myriad of unsettling traffic jams.

Some quick notes about Saturday's
post-game repast at Institution Ale

Bill Doswell and Michael Contreras

They bumped into each other randomly at Institution Ale. We were celebrating the Stingers Sophomores win while Bill was there preparing for his nephew's Stingers Juniors game in about two hours.

Bill and Michael went to elementary, middle and high school together a little over 30 years ago.

We were notified on Monday about the weekend's results in the Gold Coast Youth Football League's Sophomore National Conference.

On Sunday, Michael and Jacob went down to Huntington Beach for their annual American Civil War Re-enactment.

Jacob looked ready to support
his Northern brethren

I wonder what this new cap
is all about

Did he get a promotion?

On to the first big weekend of college football . . .

A season opening win for the
DIII Cal Lutheran Kingsmen

Our local college team, CLU (1-0) based in Thousand Oaks, defeated the Southwestern Pirates (0-1) from the great state of Texas on Saturday.

CLU's next game will be played on Saturday, September 16th, in Tacoma, Washington against the 0-1 Pacific Lutheran University Lutes.

Southwestern will try to pick up their first win of the 2023 season at home next Saturday versus the 0-1 Texas Lutheran Bulldogs.

Our beloved Washington Huskies
opened their season on Saturday as well

The game was at home against the always dangerous Boise State Broncos who represent the Mountain West Conference.

There has been a ton of hype about the Dawgs since the end of last years vastly improved 11-2 campaign.

My only hope was that we were not swallowing any of this "rat poison" as Alabama Coach Nick Saban calls it.

We did just fine after as bit of a slow start

The 1-0 Huskies will be at home against the 1-0 Tulsa Golden Hurricanes of the American Athletic Conference next Saturday.

Boise State (0-1) will play at home next weekend against the BIG XII's Central Florida Knights (1-0).

The PAC-12 Conference is playing in its final season before the member schools literally scatter to every other part of the United States. Of note is that after the first two weekends of play, the PAC-12 football teams are a combined 13-0 in 2023.

Interesting.

Now for the latest American football news from the European continent . . .

The ELF played their final regular
season games over the weekend

* 2023 Playoff Team

Only six clubs make it into the post season. The three conference champions are automatically in the tournament. The next best three teams are also in based on a variety of tie breakers.

The three 8-4 squads from Berlin, Tirol and Wroclaw were all vying for the last two Wild Card berths. Based on the ELF's tie breakers, the Tirol Raiders were the odd team out.

Three more weeks left in the
ELF's third season of operation

The #1 seeded Western Conference ChampionRhein Fire (12-0) and #2 seeded and defending 2022 ELF Champion and Eastern Conference Champion Vienna Vikings (12-0) have first round byes.

The #3 seed went to the Central Conference Champion Stuttgart Surge (10-2) who will host the #6 seeded Wroclaw Panthers (8-4) in a Wild Card game next weekend.

The other Wild Card game next weekend will see the #4 seeded Frankfurt Galaxy (10-2) hosting the #5 seeded Berlin Thunder (8-4).

The American football season is in high gear at all levels all over the globe and I LOVE it!
