If it Is a Saturday in the Fall, Then it MUST be Time for Camarillo Stingers Football!

Saturday, September 16, 2023

It was a BEAUTIFUL day in Saugus, California for an American Pop Warner football game!

All of us who are fans of Jacob and Michael's youth football team believed that this would be an extremely tough game.

It was indeed.

Camarillo Stingers
3 Wins - 0 Losses

at

Saugus Spartans Navy
2 Wins - 1 Loss

While the Stingers only had enough players turn out to create one team at the Sophomore level, the Spartans had enough athletes to field two teams this year.

The Saugus organization split their large Sophomore contingency into Navy and White teams. The Navy squad is made up of the best Spartan players while the White team, 0-4 after today, is a bit less talented.

The game would start with the first of seven onside kickoffs by the Spartans. This time the Stingers recovered but Camarillo would have trouble with this later in the game.

The Calm . . .

. . . before the Storm!

The Saugus Defense was on fire to start the game.

The Spartans QB was OUTSTANDING!

He completed a wide variety of passes including just enough long bombs to cause the Stingers problems.

Camarillo would have to be
good tacklers in space to prevail

Overall, the Stingers Defense
played well against the run

Camarillo's running game got
untracked late in the First Quarter

Nice block on the left!

Taking off through a BIG hole!

More of the same with a
different Camarillo ball carrier

This play wound up being . . .

. . . a Camarillo TOUCHDOWN!

About to score a Two-Point PAT

End of the First Quarter
Camarillo - 8
Saugus Navy - 0

The Second Quarter saw the Stingers
still running the ball successfully

Nearing pay dirt again

Another Touchdown for the Stingers

The two-point PAT attempt was stopped by the Saugus Defense but the Stingers now led 14-0. All was going great!

Not so fast my friend. Saugus returned the ensuing Camarillo kickoff to the house, Stingers 14 - Spartans 8.

Then Saugus recovered their onside kickoff.

Saugus took to the air . . .

. . . often!

Jacob rallying to the ball

The Spartans scored to tie up the game at 14 all.

Then they recovered another onside kickoff.

Back to the Saugus Air Attack

Jacob at DE trying to
pressure the Spartans QB

Good pass breakup by this
Stingers DB

The Spartans did it again having now scored three TDs in lightning like fashion in the last three minutes of the Second Quarter.

Halftime Score
Saugus Navy - 20
Camarillo - 14

Catch-As-Catch-Can
to start the Third Quarter

Jacob was now playing
Cornerback

A short Spartan pass completion
turned into a big gain

Back to the Stingers
"Pound and Ground" game

A Saugus DB breaking up a
Stingers pass play

More Stingers open field tacking
techniques put to the test

Every yard was contested by
the Spartans Defense

End of the Third Quarter
Saugus Navy - 26
Camarillo - 14

Saugus was still throwing
the ball all over the lot

Recovering another Saugus
onside kickoff

Thank goodness!

The going was still tough for
the Stingers Offense

Sprinting past a diving Spartan

Some much needed pass rush
by this Stinger

Another successful short pass
attempt by Saugus

Good job rallying to the ball

The Spartans continuing to
sling it late in the Fourth Quarter

In the open field, one grabs on to
ANYTHING to make a tackle

Uncatchable Pass

A new Stingers RB to end the game

Jacob now playing Tight End

Camarillo might be in an
Illegal Use of Hands situation here

Nice block #8!

When the flood gates opened,
THEY REALLY OPENED!

Final Score
Saugus Navy (3-1) - 40
Camarillo (3-1) - 14

While the final score was disappointing, especially after leading 14-0 and then giving up 40 unanswered points, we were all proud to see the Stingers players to a man playing hard to the end.

Bottom line was simply that the Saugus Navy team was better today.

Next up for the now 3-1 Stingers is a trip next Saturday at Noon to Valencia H.S. to play the Santa Clarita Wildcats who were 2-1 today going into their game against the 1-1 Calabasas Rams Gold team.
